Know before you go
Banff may get all the hype, but Jasper National Park, its neighbor to the north, is just as spectacular and nearly twice as large. Surrounded by the Canadian Rockies in a truly remote area, this park doesn't have any nearby towns, so your best option is to stay in the park's main commercial hub--the town of Jasper. Its downtown area has shops, restaurants, and a few nightlife options, though it's still pretty sleepy. Lodging here ranges from luxe to affordable, just don't expect to find any huge price breaks. Prefer more solitude? Outside of downtown, there are several resorts, lodges, and private rentals. Little tip on these: Consider hunting for a space with a kitchenette, so you can skip the drive into town for every meal.
