There are bikes in the garage which can be used to explore the tracks through the nearby woods. You walk from the cottage directly into the magical woods with their network of easily accessible caves, including the famous King Arthur's cave and Merlin's cave. The woods abound with deer and two wildlife reserves are renowned for their bird and butterfly life. Just across the river lies Symonds Yat Rock where peregrines can be viewed at their nest from the RSPB telescopes. The river provides an opportunity to explore either by canoe - two inflatable canoes and two sit-on kayaks are available for guest use, whilst there are boat trips up the river for a more sedate journey. The Forest of Dean is nearby as are two market towns of Monmouth and Ross on Wye both with good shopping facilities. Abergavenny and Hay on Wye are both within easy reach and providing the gateway to the Black Mountains. A chain of border castles from Goodrich to Grosmont are all easily accessible. The cities of Gloucester, Hereford, Cardiff and Bristol are all within one hour's driving distance.More

Good to hear that you enjoyed your stay. Would just like to add that the kayaks actually split into two and will go in the back of a car.

Keys to the cottage are kept in a key safe by the door. My cleaner lives locally should there be any problems. I shall provide an Information Brochure approximately four weeks prior to your stay. This should tell you everything you need to know about the cottage and the surrounding area. Well behaved dogs are welcome with the proviso that they have been flea treated just prior to your stay.

About the neighbourhood
Symonds Yat has a long history as a tourist spot, visited by Wordsworth and many of his contemporaries. The RSPB involvement with the local nesting Peregrine falcons has put it once more in the spotlight. The west bank (where Wyewood Cottage is located) is the quiet area, though there are several good pubs in the village. The hand-pulled ferry gives you easy access to the eastern bank of the river and the pubs on offer there. The river offers quiet river cruises or more energetic canoeing expeditions, besides angling opportunities. Or, you can sit in the gardens and watch the river flow by. Come in the spring to see the thousands of snowdrops by the river, a little later to enjoy the wild garlic. The Forest of Dean is nearby.
Getting around
To access the Forest of Dean - head towards Ross on Wye and then take the turning for Symonds Yat East. Do not take the next turning for Symonds Yat. Puzzlewood (used to film Dr Who and Star Wars) is just beyond Coleford. The Cycle track Centre is signposted from Welsh Bicknor. For the Black Mountains, take the A40 towrds Monmouth, follow the signs for Abergavenny and then Hereford; turn left at Llanfihangel Crucorney. For the Golden Valley, turn left at Woods of Whitchurch and follow signposts dependent on which villages you wish to visit.
