We were very disappointed to see that the house is much more run down than photos show; desperately needs work! It's damp & musty, with mold in some rooms; don't bring books, or they'll get warped. Tons of bugs; we were attacked nightly by mosquitos! Place...More

About the neighbourhood
Neighborhood: Walkable community in the old sugar cane town of Pahala, Hawai'i. The town is located between the two entrances to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park and is immediately surrounded by macadamia nut orchards, cattle ranches and coffee farms. Beautiful ocean and mountain views can be seen from the town. Pahala is mostly dry and sunny but it does rain on occasion, mostly in the wet season (winter and spring). Sit back, sip some award-winning Ka'u Coffee, and relax in 'old Hawai'i'. Swim, snorkel and sunbathe with sea turtles at Punalu'u Black Sand Beach, 7 minutes away. Tour coffee farms and the Ka'u Coffee Mill, 5 minutes away. What to see near us: award-winning Coffee farms only 5-10 minutes away - call to arrange tour, macadamia nut orchards and cattle ranches near town, Ka'u Coffee Mill only 5 minutes away, Wood Valley Temple only 7 minutes away, Honu'apo Park/Whittington Park only 12 minutes away, Local Farmers Market on Wed and Sun - 15 minutes away, Town is between both sides of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park 20-45 minute drive to trails/entrances, South Point or Ka Lae - southernmost tip of USA - 40 minutes away, Green Sand Beach 40 minute drive plus 30-45 minute hike, Located near Hawai'i longest uninhabitated coastline, Former Sugar Cane Plantation homes, Waterfall hikes nearby (weather permitting), Old style Hawai'i - relaxing and undeveloped. Parking and transport: off-street parking for each cottage, free. Off-islanders - we recommend renting a car. There is a bus route but it is slow, often crowded and only runs once in the morning and once in the evening each direction per day. Hawai'i Island is much larger than other Hawaiian Islands (it will take more than a day to tour the island) and we are located in the least populated district - the South side. It takes an average of 1-1.5 hours from Hilo Airport and 1.5-2 hours to Kona Airport, depending on your speed (we have a minimum, 40, and a maximum speed limit, 55, on the highway). Please make sure to pick up main food items, specialty/dietary foods, and favorite brands in Hilo or Kona as the local convenience store has limited supplies.
