On the second floor, five bedrooms, three with fireplaces, offer ample sleeping space (although if more is needed, the first floor sunroom and TV room with adjoining full bathrooms can easily be converted into bedrooms using our queen airbeds). Vacation homes abound, but none other offers such serenity and natural beauty, while allowing you to stay in a house shelled by Union gunboats in 1861 or on the land raided by the British fleet during the War of 1812. The property includes historic outbuildings, including a smoke house and granary from the 1850s and an enormous work shed housing some of the cannonballs uncovered on the property. Come take off your shoes and relax in this historic estate on the Rappahannock River, one mile from the Chesapeake Bay. Above all, come sit on the deck and experience a sunset as you have never seen it before, and be a part of history.

Pop Castle is the most amazing rental property I've ever visited.
My family, which this time included my husband, our two teenagers, plus another adult and an 8 year-old, just visited Pop Castle for the third time. I first encountered the property while on a long weekend with college friends, but it was a place that also just screamed "Perfect for kids!" So on every return visit, I've brought my kids, and often, their friends. So although the house looks in many ways like something you'd see on a historic tour, it's very comfortable and kid-proof. The house includes all items you'd expect at a rental plus lots of extras. Often when we visit, we don't leave the expansive property the entire time. The house accommodates a large group well; there are many full bathrooms and the bedrooms are spread out so that early risers don't awaken later sleepers. The outside spaces are so lovely, though, that you're able to tear yourself away from all that the house itself offers. Having always visited in the spring and fall, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the summer weather didn't interfere with our enjoyment of the yard and river at all. There was always a breeze from the river, so it was cool enough to sit outside even at mid-day. Also, I had feared that it would be buggy outside (because it is this time of year at our home in Richmond), but we didn't notice mosquitoes at all. The owner has recently added a two-person canoe with life-jackets, which the kids used in the shallows and adults and kids used up and down the riverbanks. On one paddle, we saw a bald eagle, and we enjoyed watching nesting ospreys the entire weekend. The kids spent endless hours jumping off the dock and swimming and wading...we didn't even get around to the firepit and making s'mores, which was always a big springtime favorite. I really can't do Pop Castle justice in a short review, but it's a place you have to see to believe.

Unbelievable vacation home...unlike anywhere else you've ever stayed.
My family of four has just returned from a spring break trip to Pop Castle. We had our two children plus 5 of their friends...7 teenagers in all, and we could have fit more, as my daughter pointed out. This was my third trip to Pop Castle, after first having visited with college girlfriends. The house itself is amazing, both historic and yet comfortable at the same time, with all modern conveniences. There was plenty of space for all of us to spread out, from a sunny sitting room to a comfortable TV area, plus spacious bedrooms for all (and more than enough full bathrooms, which is something you don't always find, especially in old homes). Of course we spent much of our time on the huge glassed-in porch, eating all of our meals there as we took in the spectacular view. The kids were never bored, despite our requirement that they leave all gaming systems at home. They played croquet and cornhole, sat on the dock, swam in the river, pushed each other on the swing, played ping-pong and basketball, watched a movie or two from the extensive DVD collection, and roasted marshmallows at the fire-pit overlooking the river. The grounds are so extensive that they really never wanted to leave except for the occasional run or bike ride. The kitchen was well stocked, and we ate all meals except one at the house. I've always thought that "going to the river" was for boat people, but we don't have a boat, nor did we need one at Pop Castle. It was just the right blend of entertaining and relaxing; I think my blood pressure dropped 10 points as I had the first glass of wine while gazing at the river. Staying there is a truly unique experience, and one that can't truly be appreciated until you're gazing at that beautiful river view with the one-of-a-kind house at your back. We'll be back again for sure.
