About the neighbourhood
The island's website is well worth looking at and describes it as a charming jewel. No wonder it is one of favourite destinations for Parisians. The island has been a well known tourist resort since the 1920s. It was transformed when a new road bridge connected it to the mainland about 20 years ago but the government of the island has been careful to guard its character against over development or unpleasantness (camping and camping cars are very carefully restricted, for example). Historically the island has been a militarily strategic site. There are several Vauban forts and the town of St Martin is a World Heritage site.
How to get there
The Ile de Re is very near the city of La Rochelle. Train : La Rochelle is connected to the French TGV rail network. You can take a taxi or bus from the station or hire a car. Fly : From the UK you can fly to La Rochelle airport very easily. There are flights most days all year via Ryan Air from Stansted. In the summer, there are regular flights from several regional airports in addition including Manchester, Bristol and Southampton. Alternatively, you can fly to Poitiers (90 mins drive from the house) or Nantes or Bordeaux (both 120 mins drive). Taxi, bus or hire car at La Rochelle airport. The house is 15 minutes drive away. Drive from UK : Suggest take ferry to St Malo or Caen. Ile de Re is about 4.5 hours from St Malo, 5 hours from Caen. The most stress free journey is...
