About the neighbourhood
Once leaving the A75 the country lanes are surrounded by farmland and forests, many of which lead to or pass through little villages which are ideal for enjoying coffee or lunch breaks. Most also have pubs / restaurants which are a ideal to return to for evening meals and we are happy to recommend our own favourites - including the delightful harbour village of Portpatrick which is just four miles away. The coastal route to the Mull of Galloway offers spectacular views across Luce Bay towards the Lake District hills and the Isle of Man and there are numerous beaches to explore along the way. Common sights include seals sunbathing on the rocks, herons wading through the shallow waters and buzzards and birds of prey soaring above. The area is perfect for bird-watchers, fishermen - and women!, golfers, hikers, cyclists, horticulturalists, photographers - and for people just wishing to get away from it all. Most visitors to the area comment that a week is really only enough time to barely scratch the surface of what there is to explore and enjoy in the locality - from castles to gardens & historic locations, shopping towns, day trips and visitor centres. The area is steeped in history and delightful little places to explore and enjoy and for those wishing to travel further afield there are daily ferries to Belfast from the nearby ports at Cairnryan and trains from Stranraer to Ayr and Glasgow.
How to get there
From the M6 North: Turn left at Gretna onto the A75 towards Dumfries & Stranraer. On approaching Stranraer at the 30mph countdown markers, turn left into Commerce Road towards Blackparks Industrial Estate / The Creamery. At the end of Commerce Road turn left at the mini roundabout on to the A77. Take the first right turn which is clearly marked Ochtrelure Way and go straight ahead at all the mini roundabouts (5 in total). After the last roundabout there are two houses on the left surrounded by a tall wooden garden fence. Turn left immediately after these two houses and follow the road up the hill into the National Speed Limit. Follow the road right over the hill and down the other side and we are situated at the bottom on the left hand side.
