Peaceful, relaxing place to stay for a quiet walking holiday, with pub a 5 minute walk away.
Second time at Shelburne Lodge and hope to be back again soon. House is great, with everything you could possibly need. Great location if you are into walking, cycling and being outdoors, with the added bonus of the Cairnbaan Hotel just along the canal.

Lovely house with comfortable living and bedrooms.
We were a party of 7 adults, 1 child and 2 dogs. House had loads of room for us all. Bedrooms were huge and very comfortable. Kitchen was very well equipped with everything you would need. Fruit trees in the garden were a huge hit with my grand-daughter as was the big box of toys (she brought her own and never looked at them as this box was much more interesting). Location was perfect. We took a sail over to Gigha and had a fabulous lunch at The Boathouse Restaurant. An amazing weekend in a beautiful period house. One small thing to note if you have dogs, the garden is not secure. My dogs love water and we therefore had to keep a close eye on them as the canal is only a few metres away!

Superb and relaxing
We were only a party of 6 but room for plenty more due to the size of the house. All rooms large and very well furnished with both modern and period furniture. Kitchen as should be, large and well equipped, a place for all to sit and plan the day's events over breakfast. Pleasant the watch all the boats move down the locks on the canal. Fishing off the peer at Tarbert is a must for the plentiful mackerel. A wonderful relax with very helpful and responsive property owner. A must for a return visit.

Relaxing large family home
Spent a lovely few days here for a birthday celebration with the family including dogs. Very comfortable house with plenty space for us all. There was also a bbq and large patio set which was great given the weather. House is in a super location next to the canal with loads of walks and cycles on the doorstep. Mike was very helpful and quick to respond to any queries.

Still Excellent
We stayed in this property last year when arranging a family funeral. Sadly we were back recently for the same reason. It was no contest where we would stay as this is simply an excellent large house. The upshot is that the family has decided to visit again next year for a general get together where we can enjoy the property in a more positive atmosphere. I said it all before in my previous positive review but if a family wants to stay in a traditional large Scottish house and use it as a base to enjoy the surrounding area then this is it. Food at the nearby Cairnbaan Hotel (easy walking distance) is good and there are also many forest walks in the close vicinity. We can't wait to return and cannot recommend highly enough.

Great family holiday.
We loved the house and the garden, lots of space for us all - granny, children, grandchildren. We enjoyed being right beside the canal and the locks, seeing the boats coming and going, and how the locks worked. The tow path is a great place to cycle or walk, or just enjoy the view. Close to supermarket in Lochgilphead. Various historical sites to visit - standing stones, museum at Kilmartin, Tarbert, beach at Machrihanish beautiful. Lovely drives along to Crinan ferry and the end of the canal at the harbour (you could also walk or cycle this), Tayvalich and Carsaig - great views over to Jura and Islay. The 'boys' took the ferry over to Islay for the day and a whisky distillery tour. A very enjoyable, relaxing week for us all. Would love to visit again.

Great family stay
Just returned from a 4 night stay in this lovely house. We were 2 families, 10 people in total and 3 dogs, and this house was perfect. Kitted out well and also towels, soap, tea towels and kitchen sponges etc all provided, which is great that you don't need to bring it all. Spacias and great outside space. Such a pretty location, watch the boats pass the house through loch 8. Walked to Crinen along the canal footpath, 9 miles in total. Went open canoeing in Tarbert which was great fun and only £15 an hour and visited Arran. Not the best island to visit, previously visited Mull which is so lovely, we would not return to Arran but would return and stay on Mull. This part of scotland is beautiful. Great house will hopefully return. Owners great too, no one was arriving on the day we left and they said we could stay and not rush off in the morning which was lovely, thank you.

About the neighbourhood
Activities and attractions nearby include beavers, boat trips, interesting walks, castles, prehistoric stone circles, whirlpools, islands, bike hire with easy scenic rides, beaches, a wide choice of restaurants and bars.
Getting around
Walking or biking directly from the house, along the canal towpath, is a great start to the holiday, and this gives access to forestry walks too. With a car you can access a hugh choice of interesting destinations - far more than you could possibly visit in a week's holiday. Boat trips are another option, perhaps the fast ferry to Jura, a wild rib ride to see the whirlpools at Correyvreckan, or a day trip to Mull on the regular ferries from Oban.
