Old Castle Inn is a large converted public house full of character and with unusual architectural features, close to Alton Towers and the beautiful Peak National Park. The beautiful village of Alton sits above the Churnet Valley adjacent to glorious Dimmingsdale on the edge of the Peak District. It is ideal for walkers and cyclists (a disused railway line passes through the village). It is situated less than 5 minutes from Alton Towers resort - a bus is available from the bottom of the road. The village has 5 pubs, most of which offer good food, and an excellent restaurant on the same street as the property. We were a group of 8 male walkers and found it very suitable for us.
Very interesting house with lots of features eg four poster bed, music room. Right in the middle of Alton and handy for pubs and shops. Good walks from the house.

Unique
You simply won't ever stay in another house quite like this one. Full of nooks and crannies, toys, artefacts, weird and wonderful furniture, fantastic books, instruments, silly wigs, board games and also video game consoles. Literally something for everyone and every occasion. Perfectly located for the towers but if that's not your thing then it's also a great location for the start of several countryside walks. Lovely garden out the back, huge kitchen/diner for meals in if not 2 fantastic pubs are a stone's throw away. On top of that the hosts are very helpful and attentive without being intrusive.

Christmas booking
We just returned from a 5 night stay for Christmas and had a lovely time. The house is full of charm, as is the village of Alton and we’d love to return. We’re a large family ranging from babies to grandparents, with dogs, and we were all well accommodated. The bedrooms are spacious and we all felt comfortable. As it was Christmas there was a LOT of cooking, and the kitchen was well equipped with almost everything we needed, which is impressive as you nearly always need something obscure and can’t find it when you’re away from your own home. This barely happened for us. The village is quaint, with 2 handy shops and 2 lovely pubs. The men of the family visited the pubs a lot, for drinks, playing pool and then for some food on the last night. Definitely recommend the White Hart and the Bulls Head. We met some lovely neighbours while we were there on one of the most beautiful high streets we’ve seen. It was so twinkly and beautiful at Christmas. The host was very accommodating with allowing us to check in early (really valuable to us arriving for Christmas with presents to hide) and check out without the pressure of a hard deadline.

Simply the best
This was our second stay at the Old Castle Inn and was every bit as good. Just a stone’s throw away from the theme park, we found we could whizz in for a couple of early hours before it became too busy, go home for lunch and a rest, then return in the evening for Scarefest in the dark! The house itself is vast and very comfortable with every home comfort considered. Plenty of parking and close to the Londis for essentials. We love it and wouldn’t stay anywhere else. Thanks to Gabbi for letting us stay in her wonderful home x

Excellent clean and cizy home away from home
The Castle in is a very clean spacious home away from home. Owners paid attention to detail and made each room beautiful as well as functional. We were sad to leave and will no doubt be back soon. The Castle Inn is very well located. It is close to Alton Towers and serounded by beautiful nature. There are parking spaces about too, so no need to drag your suitcase for miles. Beds are very comfortable, and rooms are quiet. Kitchen is well equipt with all you will need. There is a dishwasher, and washing machine and a dryer too. The shower and bath are absolutely lovely at the end of a long day.

Birthday celebration
The house is situated in the very pretty little village of Alton. There is a small supermarket at the end of the road and a post office which also sells groceries round the corner. There is a pub directly opposite the property. The village is very well served with places to eat and although we didn’t try any, they all have a very good reputation and booking is recommended. We found a very nice circular walk involving a disused railway line and a stop off at the Ramblers Rest for an excellent cup of coffee for the adults and homemade ice cream for the children. Everybody was happy.

Large house close to Alton towers
The house is big and spacious, ideal for adult or families with older children visiting the area. With the tiled floors and steps on the ground floor would not recommend to groups with very small children or toddlers. There are plenty of books, toys and games to be had through out the house. The garden is lovely and peaceful. Upstairs - wooden flooring in bedrooms ( carpet only on stairs and landings). Bedrooms all are a fantastic size and the house layout would be great for 2 families - each would have their own floor, especially with the 2 types of bathroom. The kitchen is a great size and can accommodate larger groups. Especially with the 2 large tables ( 1in the kitchen and 1 in the dining area) there is plenty of space to eat. We found the front room (lounge) was not very bright , even with the lights on - but that is probably personal choice. Lovely conservatory with fairy lights that make it look magical at night. Be aware if you are there on a Sunday morning that there is a lot of traffic around - going to the churches up the road and the Alton towers traffic on the main road.

About the neighbourhood
Alton has an impressive Saxon Church, Pugin-designed buildings and it's own Castle. With several pubs, a park with children's play area, woodland and river walks, a post office, mini-mart, restaurant and conservation area, the village is both historic and attractive. Two summer shows in the village, situated in the castle and school grounds, play host to live music, tug-o-war and traditional games. Well-dressing celebrations take place across the Peak, the only Highland Games in England features each July in Ashbourne, and the famous Alton Towers firework display rounds off the autumn. Alton Towers theme park, and Splas Landings Water Park are only 5 minutes by bus or car.
