About the neighbourhood
The cottage is located in the picturesque village of Gayle, a short ten minute walk from Hawes. Hawes is England's highest market town, set 850 feet above sea water and home to the famous Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese. The town is set in beautiful scenery (the name is derived from the Old Norse word hals, meaning 'neck' or 'pass between mountains') and has many restaurants, pubs and eateries as well as gift and antique shops. The town also has several good sized shops to buy provisions, a butchers, a local market, a laundry, library and other useful facilities. There are some great attractions nearby including local waterfalls at Aysgarth, a fantastic gorge walk in Ingleton, the cliffs at Malham and the Lake District is an hours drive.
Getting around
Some personal favourite things to do: Ingleton waterfall walk (all day, my favourite walk). Malham Cove walk (all day, great views, plus Harry Potter 7 location). Buttertubs pass (great drive). Tan Hill pub (worth the drive). Hardraw force waterfalls (spectacular after the rain). Lake Windermere (1.5 hours drive each way, take a boat ride etc.). The Forbidden Corner (good for young kids). Great walking and cycling straight from the front door.
