Overview
Cottage -
4 Bedrooms , 1 Bathroom , Sleeps 6
Gayle, North Yorkshire, England
Our cottage with its thick solid stone walls is very cosy both in winter with a welcoming coal fire and in summer. Wensleydale is an excellent centre for walking and touring. Nearby is Gayle Mill, a historic and operational sawmill, and Wensleydale Creamery Visitor Centre famous for its cheese. A pretty stream with waterfalls (Gayle Beck) runs close by.

Thank you so much for your comments. Sorry about the creaky bedframe. I had never noticed it, I'm glad the other bed was OK. Your recommendations for walks will be very useful for other visitors.

We had a very comfortable week in Gayle Farmhouse, amidst uncharacteristically warm Dales weather! The house was easily spacious enough for the four of us and is particularly well-located: an easy walk into Hawes but away from the bustle (and motorbike noise!) of the town;...More

We had a great stay at Gayle Farmhouse. It is cosy and homely with a very well equipped kitchen. It is in a lovely village setting a short walk from Hawes with plenty of places to eat. Would highly recommend a visit to Gayle Farmhouse

The market town of Hawes offers an array of pubs, restaurants and interesting shops. Market Day is Tuesday. It is situated in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, an area of outstanding natural beauty.

There are two major local attractions in Gayle itself : Gayle Mill, a working sawmill which offers tours, demonstrations and special events, and Wensleydale Creamery Visitors Centre, where you can see cheese being made, and sample the many varieties of Wallace and Gromit's favourite in the cheese shop. It also has its own restaurant and coffee shop.

In Hawes you can visit the Ropemaker's or the nearby Countryside Museum, which has exhibitions throughout the year, demo days where you see traditional skills brought to life, like drystone walling, spinning and weaving; there are hav...

Getting around
Gayle is about 20 minutes drive from Garsdale station, on the Settle-Carlisle line. There are about 6 trains per day to Carlisle and the same number to Leeds, calling at several interesting places on the way, like Appleby or Skipton. You buy your ticket on board the train, have a leisurely ride, and avoid the parking problems in the towns. There is also a Little White Bus which takes you to and from Garsdale Station from the bus shelter along Gayle Lane, which is useful if you don't have a car. You can download timetables for the bus and also for the train from the internet.
