Artist Hideaway at Ryder Hollow

Holiday Rental House -
2 Bedrooms , 1 Bathroom , Sleeps 4
Lake Placid, New York
Our rustic home is an aesthetically-appointed barn in a woodland setting. It has an open floor plan upstairs and down; a summer sleeping porch with double bed; odorless, waterless composting toilet; separate shower; patio with firepit and wood-fired cooking oven. Upstairs sleeps family of 4 or CLOSE friends (with queen bed and two twins with no doors in between). 5 minutes from downtown LP, 20 minutes from Whiteface Ski/Mountain Biking center. High ceilings. Well-equipped kitchen.
Indoors and out, Ryder Hollow is all about melding your experience with nature. In the great room, the north picture window encompasses the majority of a 12' x 27' wall with a sweeping view to a meadow in the northern boreal forest. Wood-burning stove and in-floor heat for cold evenings.
Ryder Hollow's western boundary beyond the lean-to borde...

Interaction with guests
We like to greet and orient our guests as our facilities are unique and not standardized. If we are not able to greet guests, we like to have a dialogue prior to arrival. We're Adirondack enthusiasts. We moved here from NYC fifteen years ago and can turn you on to both recreational and cultural opportunities. Both abound here. We can help you plan your perfect day according to the season and the weather.

I spent some magical days in this barn. Karen and Peter were so caring and nice to me and my family. The house is better than the photos. It's just perfect. They have so many wonderful details all over the place, from little to big...More

Dear Maria: We loved having you and your daughters. What intrepid women to put up with Arctic temperatures and figure out how to do Lake Placid with Uber. You taught us new things about where we live! Thank you for treating our home as if...More

We stayed at the Artist Hideaway for Christmas in 2017 and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The home is just a few minutes drive outside of Lake Placid and gives you the feeling of being in a very secluded spot while also being close to all...More

If you come back in summer, we can fix you up with perfect swimming holes, little mountains to climb (or big), and paddles galore. Happy New Year and thank you for choosing the barn, Chris. Karen and Peter

About the neighbourhood
We live in a hamlet, a few miles from downtown, that is adjacent to wild forest. There are woodland trails on the property that lead to our lean-to, an open-air log structure, for forest contemplation. We can turn you on to all sorts of outdoor activities. That's what the Adirondacks are all about.
Getting around
Uber, Rick's Taxi, the free green trolley that does a circuit downtown, a shuttle to the mountain during ski season from local hotels, but for maximum flexibility, you need a car. In winter it's helpful to have all-wheel drive, if not snow tires. If none, be flexible and travel on days without snowfall.
Car advised
How to get there
Airport: Lake Clear, NY: 59.0 km
Railway: Amtrak to Lake Placid (shuttle picks you up in Westport, NY): 56.0 km
Ferry: Essex, NY, Lake Champlain: 64.0 km
We had a Venezuelan guest in winter who decided not to rent a car, took Amtrak train from NYC to Lake Placid (scenic), and stocked up, toured town, and took day trips to Whiteface ski mountain with Uber! A British brother and sister came without a car one summer and walked everywhere! That was really impressive. This said, a car is normally how visitors arrive. We are not in town. And there are glorious things to do that take you to rivers, lakes, mountains. Once you arrive in Lake Placid and get to the intersection of Old Military Road and Averyville Road (aka Averyville Lane), you are about 1.5 miles from the barn. You'll go over the Chubb River (where there's a parking lot for the Northville-Placid trailhead), through the woods (where there's a put-in for paddlers), and you... more
