About the neighbourhood
ROUSSAC is a commune in the Haute-Vienne department in the Limousin region in west-central France. A small tranquil and friendly village with its tiny bar in the square where you can enjoy a glass of wine with the locals. Roussac is an ideal location to relax or take a long walk through the beautiful countryside and to enjoy the peace and quiet of the area. Roussac is an ideal base for you to visit the many historical villages or nearby Lake Pardoux. Visit the various night markets, and the many, many brocantes and antiques fairs the Limousin has to offer, which continue throughout the summer.

LAKE SAINT PARDOUX IN THE HAUTE-VIENNE

In the middle of unspoilt countryside, the Lake Saint Pardoux resort is a major tourist attraction in the Haute-Vienne and the Limousin. It's also a leisure centre for local clients and families mainly coming from the urban area of Limoges. Nestling in the heart of the Limousin forest, this 330-ha lake is the ideal place for water and outdoor sports.

Three centres have been created :
Santrop : the welcome centre at the entrance to the lake,
Chabannes : welcomes youngsters and groups,
Fréaudour : orientated towards water sports (water skiing…)

New on the Santrop site :
You can discover the new acrobatic park “Arbre & Aventure” (Tree & Adventure) : more than 60 workshops and 6 circuits of varying difficulty, for everyone.

FARMERS MARKETS

As with all French regions there are many markets to explore in the Limousin. They range from very small, weekly, village markets with only 2 or 3 stalls selling fresh produce to large Foires that close the town centre for the morning. The Foires are usually worth attending as they attract stall holders from wider area and the choice of goods on offer is more varied. Although not strictly in the Limousin, the largest and most famous market is held at Les Herolles. The location was chosen as the town is on the borders of the Vienne, the Haute Vienne and the Indre. The market is now the largest street market in France and is also believed to be the oldest, dating back over 400 years. It is possible to buy everything from livestock, to farm machinery, plants, furniture, cheese and wine as well as an array of local produce. The stall holders are normally set up by 8.30am and be sure to arrive early to avoid the queues for parking. There is a small charge for parking (1€50). The market is held on the 29th of every month, unless it is a Sunday in which case the market is on the following Monday. Les Herolles is between Lignac on the D32 and Coulonges on the D123.

ORADOUR SUR GLANE

Oradour Sur Glane the martyr village, now an important national monument and a reminder of the horrors of war. An interactive visitors centre explains the facts in both English and French.

BELLAC (Is the nearest town to Roussac approximately 15 minutes)

Bellac is situated to the north-west of the Haute-Vienne department of Limousin, near the border with the Poitou-Charentes region. It is a small market town with a long history based around the leather tanning industry, that was important here during the Middle Ages.

The 13th century stone arched bridge across the tranquil River Vincou is a good place to start you visit, and to have a view across the town. Heading into Bellac itself you will see, among other things, numerous ancient houses, most of these date from the 15th to 17th centuries.

You will also see the remains of part of the original defensive walls of the town, and an impressive 17th century town hall with small towers on two of the corners of the building.

Among the notable religious monuments in the town is the 12th - 15th century Church of Notre-Dame, which stands at the highest point in Bellac and dominates the town skyline. Because of the extended period between the church's first construction and its completion you can see elements of both roman and gothic style architecture. Market days are on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.
