The Cottage on Heron Cove
Cottage at Heron Cove
My wife and I have just enjoyed our seventh stay at the cottage. The location is sheer bliss. Its right on the beautiful Gary Creek with its own boat dock. The view from the porch is sublime. We have rented and stayed at many locations over the years but nothing compares to this. The cottage is well stocked with condiments, spices, utensils and much more. If you are a birder, fisherman, biker, canoer or just would like a peaceful quiet place to relax, this is the place. After we spend the day biking through Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, Hoopers Island, Elliots Island, Taylors Island we like to come back to the cottage and catch some blue claw crabs off the dock. Chicken wings seem to work best. The cottage does have 2 professional crab traps but catching them on a string and netting them is much more fun. We have seen a variety of birds including Ospreys, Egrets, Herons and many other bird species from the porch and dock. On our most recent visit I was making our dinner on the grill when a red fox ran across the back of the property. There are Sika deer which we have seen on our bike adventures. They are from Asia and brought to the Eastern shore in 1900 by Clement Henry. They are very different than the white tail that most of us see all the time. There are many historical sites throughout Dorchester and Talbot counties you must see. The cottage is in a beautiful rural area but not far from shopping and excellent restaurants. We almost never give reviews but “The Cottage on Heron Cove” deserves a 5 star review. You will most certainly not be disappointed and look forward to next time…..

A fantastic experience.
The cottage and property are awesome. The cottage is outfitted with everything you can need. The screened in porch is a great place to relax or eat. Crabbing is a blast with the provided traps and the fire pit is a nice way to end the day. The property is private and serene with only nature noises. There are many restaurants and attractions within a short drive. Bob is super responsive and is great at offering suggestions for things to do. We will be back.

Lovely respite
Heron Cove fit the bill 100% for our vacation hideaway. My husband and I felt at home immediately upon walking onto the porch, taking in the spectacular creek view, and entering the well-appointed kitchen. The home is charming, very clean, well kept, and supplied with all the cookware, utensils, dishes, spices, oils, etc. that you need. The queen bed was very comfortable. The porch was my favorite area by far, and we spent the majority of our time out there. The adjoining deck and close by fire pit were extra bonuses. Stargazing is delightful, as city lights are far away. The area itself provided all of what we were looking for: The Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge (plenty of photography opportunities and good for driving through or biking through); kayaking on the Transquaking River (via Blackwater Adventures); bicycling on many of the rural roads; an assortment of delicious dining options (Theo's, Ava's, Vintage 414, and RAR in Cambridge; and Old Salty's in Fishing Creek). We purchased several locally-made items at the Farmer's Market (held on Thursdays), and I am sure that we visited Emily's Produce at least three times. You're only a short drive to Easton, St. Michael's (Maritime Museum), and Oxford (Scottish Highland Creamery). The shopkeepers and servers who tended to us could not have been nicer or more welcoming. Last but not least: Bob is a delight to communicate with; the pride, love, and knowledge he has of the area are seemingly limitless. Do not hesitate to book this incredible vacation spot!

A little slice of heaven
Our family of four absolutely loved our time at The Cottage. The property is on a secluded little peninsula overlooking the Gary River and vast stretches of nature. We enjoyed river views from every window in the house and delighted in the sounds of owls at night and loons at dusk. Numerous other waterfowl were there for birdwatchers to enjoy during the day. We took our bikes out and enjoyed exploring the area, including the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, a short distance away. The owners were so helpful in sharing information about the area attractions and access to necessary conveniences (Simmons Center Market was enjoyable - get the chocolate milk from the local dairy!). The cottage itself was very comfortable and extremely clean - something that in these covid times, we can all appreciate. The Cottage was well equipped and we found that many of the items we usually bring to cottage/ cabin rentals were not needed - they provided all of the items we could imagine, including cleaning supplies, paper goods, more than enough dishware, sufficient cookware and cutlery and many condiments and spices for cooking at The Cottage. We read through the guest book and completely understand why there are many families that have been returning multiple times over the years. I expect we'll be among those families that make a return trip to this little slice of heaven on the Gary River.

Perfect secluded getaway!
We had a perfect week at the cottage. The property and the cottage are maticulously maintained, and the location is very secluded and scenic. We enjoyed fishing and crabbing off the pier, lounged in the hammock, dined on the very large screened in porch, and kayaked down the creek (local kayak rental). Owners Bob and Joan went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable - a pantry stocked with essentials, an outdoor grill, and everything you need for a cozy evening by the fire pit. They provided crabbing and fishing tips too. I wish we could have stayed longer. It was the perfect place to unwind, catch up on my reading and play a few rounds of Scrabble with the family. We'll be back! Thanks Bob and Joan.

Cozy family retreat
We just returned from a week long visit at the Cottage and we loved it so much! It was very very clean and was extremely well appointed in everything you could need. Every dish and pot and kitchen gadget imaginable, spices and books, local menus, binoculars, etc. It has beautiful wood floors, windows that face the water from every room and nice cold AC for a hot summer day. The owners Bob and Joan were great with communication leading up to, during and after our stay. Our favorite feature was the screened in porch. Our daughter screams about bees/bugs so it was great having a “safe” space she could still be outside. We brought our own crabbing traps/hand lines in addition to the pots the cottage has and did very well crabbing on chicken and bunker. We enjoyed watching the bunnies frolicking in the fields every morning and evening. The hammock was super relaxing by the water, and dawn and dusk from the dock is spectacular. We will definitely return to this cozy hideaway on the Eastern Shore.

Pristine Waterfront
The location is out of the way but not to far from the action in Cambridge. Crabbing and fishing was amazing. Water on the back creeks off the Little Choptank are made for waverunners, kayaking, paddle boarding and boating, the water was like glass.....perfect for the HO Yamaha. The best part were the owners Bob & Joan, need some advice on anything related to Cambridge and the surrounding towns and they will advise you where to go. Wildlife galore, turkeys, deer, foxes, bald eagles and did I mention the fishing! Thank you BOB & JOAN!!! See you soon.

A Great Place to Relax
The Cottage has been our vacation get-away now for the last 6 years and we are planning to return again this year. Our children (one in college and one post college) still love it there and still join us for vacation. If you enjoy peace and quiet, like to fish and crab and like to have some room to roam, this is the place for you! There are only about 8 houses on the cove and rarely did we even see a boat. You don’t need a boat to enjoy the water as there is a nice pier. The area is great for canoeing or kayaking as well. The cottage is located away from traffic which makes it perfect for running and biking. Cambridge is only 10 minutes away and easy to get to so if you forget anything it’s an easy trip to pick it up.

About the neighbourhood
The Cottage at Heron Cove sits on a point of land on Gary Creek once used as a lookout by Native Americans. Enjoy scenic views of a private nature preserve and a historical homestead dating back to the mid 1600's. From the porch you can see down to the Little Choptank River or up to the living history museum at Spocott Windmill A short seven miles drive into Cambridge finds one with a vast array of amenities to include golf, shops, museums, spas, fine dining, marinas, antiques, an airport, and just about anything else one would want on your vacation getaway. For your sightseeing pleasure you are approximately one and one half hours away from Ocean City and Assateague Island as well as 40 minutes from Easton and Oxford. A quick drive finds you at the Blackwater wildlife refuge; although, it is not uncommon to see eagles, geese, egrets, herons or the nesting osprey from your porch at 'The Cottage'. In spring and fall come and enjoy the cry of the loons as they rest on Gary Creek during their migration.
