Holiday Rental House
5* rated by Visit England and Gold Award winning Elk Cottage is located in the quiet hamlet of Glassonby situated in the middle of the Eden Valley. Access to the rolling hills of the Eden Valley and its numerous nearby walks is one of the best features of this cosy cottage in Cumbria. Elk Cottage's recent renovation brings this traditional Cumbria long house and barns back into habitation for the first time since 1764 and Elk Cottage retains its original features including stone walls, arched openings and terraced fields. Elk Cottage has two ensuite bedrooms one of which may be arranged as king size double bed or as two single beds depending on guest preference. It has a breakfasting kitchen with granite counters, an American style fridge freezer, dishwasher, hob, oven, and microwave and a washing machine/tumble dryer in the utility room. The open plan reception room has a cast iron log burning fire (logs, kindling and matches are provided for guest use). There is broadband wifi, sustainable plantation teak garden furniture and a Weber charcoal BBQ on the private read terrace (locally sourced charcoal & utensils are provided for guest use). Elk Cottage has private parking on the gravelled drive. Though Elk Cottage is no longer part of a working farm, its position on one of the higher hills in the Eden Valley gives its gardens amazing views towards the Pennines and the rolling countryside that has seen this area in Cumbria declared one of the UK's designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Elk Cottage is certified by Visit England as a 'Pets Welcome' cottage and the gated sandstone terrace, gardens and grounds surrounding this cottage provide plenty of room for running around. There are some great walks starting from the front door of Elk Cottage - particularly our favourite along from Dale Raven along the banks of the river Eden. There are two excellent pubs for dining in Kirkoswald which is about a mile away from Elk Cottage reachable by country lane or footpath. If Elk Cottage is already reserved, please look at our sister cottage, Jenny's Croft which offers very similar accommodation and may well be available. About the neighbourhood
The Grade II listed Cumbrian long house and sandstone barns date back to the 1600s. The hamlet of Glassonby is approx. 10 miles from Ullswater, one of England's most beautiful lakes, where there are steam cruises from Pooley Bridge to Glenridding, fabulous hikes up Helvellyn, chances to walk and paddle in the National Trust Aira Force Waterfall, pony treks from Rookin House Farm and canoes and sailboats available to hire from the Glenridding Sailing Centre. When done playing in the Lake District National Park, visitors can enjoy a leisurely meal on the shoreline of Lake Ullswater at the Michelin starred Sharrow Bay, a Michelin starred Egon Ronay top 200 UK restaurant.
Getting around
Elk Cottage, Glassonby is located just a couple of miles off the A686 which is a beautifully scenic route from Penrith and crosses the River Eden. The road continues to climb the Hartside Pass to a height of 1904 ft, from where you will find magnificent views across the Eden Valley, Solway Firth and Scotland. The Settle to Carlisle railway runs through Langwathby which is only a short drive from Elk Cottage. The railway has some of the most attractive scenery & is world famous for its Victorian architecture. Penrith train station is on the West Coast Main Line, the railway linking London to Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Edinburgh & Glasgow. Glassonby & the nearby villages offer wonderful walks with beautiful scenery.
