There is also a friendly local pub and excellent Copper's café in a garden nursery. All these walking distance. Twyne cottage is in the grounds of Hardacre House which was built in the first part of the fifteenth century. Its most famous occupant was John Twyne, the last headmaster of St Augustine’s Abbey school and the first of Kings School in Canterbury after the Dissolution in 1541. He was Alderman, Mayor and MP of Canterbury and even spent time in the Tower of London when he offended King Henry VIII! He married Allice Peper of Hampshire in 1525 and they spent many years in Preston.
