Magical place, would highly recommend for a family break.
Fantastic location, amazing property to stay in with so much character. Stunning views, right on the beach, and within 5 mins walk of the town centre, bars and restaurants. Lyme Regis is a brilliant place to visit, and Sundial House was the perfect place to spend a long weekend with family. Great communication from Mark the owner, who provided all the information we needed up front, and got in touch on the day we arrived to check everything was ok.

Great location, quirky house
Our two families stayed at Sundail house in early August. On first reaching the property we were delighted with the location which is fantastic being right on the sea front. On entering the property it smelt really damp, thankfully this was confined to the ground floor however it was bad enough for me to go out and purchase room freshener. The layout of the house isn’t ideal unless like is you’re family & comfortable with each other as the bathroom on the top floor has to be walked through to gain access to a bedroom. There are two bathrooms only, top floor and bottom floor - which is awkward for the bedrooms on the second floor. It is advisable to check the layout before booking to ensure you understand how this might work for your group. There is no denying that the house is located perfectly and that it draws at lot of attention due to its unique appearance. We however felt it was lacking some TLC - the windows are crumbling in the dining room / kitchen area. Both bathrooms, especially the top floor need some updating, the shower in the top floor bathroom has no power at all & the lower floor bathroom has the unpleasant damp smell. During our stay it was fantastic weather which was great, however the house does not ventilate well and there were no fans meaning unpleasant and sticky sleepless nights. It would not have taken much to provide a few for those that need it - we had to buy one! The kitchen was ok as was the dining area which had great views across the bay. This house is all about the location & I would recommend it however I hope the current owners will perhaps consider spending some money on some much needed repairs and updates.

Unique. characterful and cosy
We spent a family weekend here over Halloween and had a great time! The house is striking from the outside, very close to the beach, which made for a great evening atmosphere as the waves crashed outside. Lots of space, so there is room and privacy for all guests, with a great kitchen for self-catering en masse and the beautiful dining room being the star feature. Highl recommended.

great location
our second visit to this unique property in under 6 months. It must be the most photographed building in Lyme Regis! The layout and numerous stairs may not suit everyone but we are already planning our next visit to this quirky and charming house

See floor plan
The location of this lovely house is really wonderful with beautiful views over the sea. For a large group (we were 8) it is wise to check the floor plan as one bedroom can only be accessed through the shared bathroom! The shower to this bathroom is very old and needs replacing...there are no locks on this bathroom either. Just a few updates would really revitalise this charming house.

Great family holiday
Great accommodation in an amazing location. Set over 4 floors, this house is perfect for families. We were a party of 4 adults and 5 children and there was plenty of space for everyone. The house was clean, well equipped and the beds very comfortable!! A really enjoyable holiday in a unique house. We had a great time, would definitely return and recommend.

Very quirky house in ideal location
This house looks stunning from outside. Looks a bit like a castle. Location is perfect! Far away enough from the Cobb so not have noise from the pubs, but a stone’s throw from the beach. The Jurassic coast just 20 minutes away. Drop off by car was easy though most car parks are a good 10-20 minutes walk away depending on where you parked. One car park was £2 a day and others about £5 a day. We got a pass for the whole duration of our stay. Inside the house is old fashioned but in a way that preserves the character of Lyme Regis. The kitchen is well furnished with plates, cups and glasses. Lots of large pots and pans if cooking for a large group of people. Layout of the kitchen is a bit odd and three of the electric hobs didn’t work very well. But the oven did and the microwave worked. I was staying with my mum and dad who are strict vegetarians who require home cooked food. We cooked Indian food everyday complete with chapatis, curries and rice with no problem! It’s a lovely house and we had a great stay with all the family. However it’s worth mentioning that layout is very quirky and it could affect your stay. For example the living room and a bathroom is on the ground floor and kitchen on first floor. The only other bathroom was on the fourth floor. So if you were staying on third floor you either had to go up for loo in middle of the night or down two floors. Not a big problem unless you have elderly people or kids who may wake up many times in the night. However, the bathroom on the top floor led to a room. The only way to get to this room was via the loo. This loo is also shared by another bedroom. But neither door of the loo had a lock! I think the owner should invest in couple of locks to avoid embarrassment! The kids were constantly walking in on my poor dad who kept forgetting to tell everyone that he was visiting the bathroom! I think to stay here it would help if you were family or very close friends! The best thing was to have breakfast and dinner in the dining room with the stunning views of the sea. And the front of the house has a balcony! It’s a great old fashioned house with lots of character. The only thing stopping me giving it 5 stars is that both the bathrooms, while looking neat and tidy, didn’t look very clean as there is water damage giving rise to mould in nooks and crannies and the grouting in the tiles. This place’s prime location makes it an expensive holiday rent when compared to others in Lyme Regis and for that I would expect bathrooms to be maintained and grouting to be renewed when required. It’s a cheap fix but makes all the difference to holiday makers as Black mould looks and is awful! On the whole a great place to stay. It’s location alone is worth it.

Prime location
Really great house in prime location on Marine Parade. Walking distance to all restaurants and attractions. We’ve stayed in Lyme Regis a lot but this is the first time at this property because of its size. It was the hottest weekend of the year so far and we slept with windows open, but it would have been nice to sit on the bench in the back garden area in the late afternoon but unfortunately the path was overgrown with brambles and weeds so you couldn’t access it. I watered the plants at the front balcony area as they too were unloved.

Recent Stay
The house and location is amazing. The house was clean fully equipped with everything. The beauty of staying in Lyme is having everything you need on your doorstep. Great restaurants, the beach, pubs and a small Tesco for your provisions. I would highly recommend this house to anyone who wants a beach location. One thing to consider is it does have a few floors which means a lot of stairs for anyone who finds stairs difficult.

About the neighbourhood
Lyme Regis is well known for its centuries old harbour and wall, known as 'The Cobb', featured in Jane Austen's novel Persuasion, and in The French Lieutenant's Woman, a novel by John Fowles, as well as the 1981 film of the same name, which was partly filmed in Lyme Regis. The town was also home to Mary Anning, one of the earliest discoverers of dinosaurs and other prehistoric reptile remains. It holds an annual Mary Anning Day and Lyme Regis Fossil Festival. A fossil of the world's largest moth was discovered in 1966 at Lyme Regis. Lyme has had some famous human visitors too. It is believed that Jane Austen stayed in Hiscott’s Boarding house on the same site as the Three Cups Hotel, in 1804. The hotel has played host to Alfred Lord Tennyson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Hilaire Belloc, G.K. Chesterton and J. R. R. Tolkien, who spent several holidays there. In 1944 General Eisenhower delivered an important briefing before D-Day to senior Allied officers in the first floor lounge. There are plenty of interesting walks around Lyme and the surrounding countryside. One of the most accessible walks runs along the river Lym and ends up in Uplyme across the border in Devon. Uplyme has a pub and filling station with a shop and post office.
