Cottage
Near the whale-watching coast of Hermanus, in the beautiful Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, you'll come across Earth Cottage. It's the ideal self-catering Hermanus breakaway. The cottage is tucked away on a smallholding in the valley, and yet it's only 6 km from the beach. It is conveniently situated on the Wine Route, perfect for exploring its 15 estates and wineries. Hermanus town is a stone's throw away. The Whale Coast Mall is 6 km (about 4 miles). Unusual for a farm stay, a tarred road leads right to your garden gate, where the parking area is. From the covered front porch (stoep) with a braai (BBQ) on wheels, you'll have views over the vineyards of Hamilton Russell, and our paddocks. It is the ideal self-catering bridal retreat or stay-over for a couple, or perhaps a family of three. There is no television. You'll have free uncapped Internet. The wi-fi signal has been boosted and is reliable. The lounge and dining area looks out over one of our paddocks. Our Arabian horses are almost always in sight. In the kitchen you'll find a three-burner gas stove, microwave oven, kettle, mini-fridge, washing machine and ample cutlery and crockery. Towels, linen and braaiwood will be ready for you. There is one bedroom. It has a double bed. In the open-plan lounge and dining area there is a three-quarter bed and a sleeper couch. Our water comes from the mountain falls. The brownish colour of the water – in the taps and in the fish pond – is the result of the roots of fynbos plants “dyeing” it. At Earth Cottage, you'll become intensely aware of nature, even though it is a working smallholding. We live close to the earth here. The pleasures of the rest of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Hermanus, Walker Bay, the lagune and Onrust are just down the road. La Vierge Restaurant is a mere 2 km away.

Interaction with guestsWe live on the farm, so your hosts, Tino and Liane are usually around to welcome new guests. ACCESSIBILITY: A flight of stairs leads down to the cottage. The steps are uneven in height and width, and could be daunting or challenging for older or infirm visitors and people with special needs. Help is at hand to carry your luggage; just ask. Inside, there’s one step from kitchen to lounge, and another from lounge to bathroom. Two steps lead down from the lounge to the bedroom.

Delightful hideaway
Earth Cottage is a delightful hideaway in the beautiful Hemel en Aarde valley. An easy short drive from Hermanus with its ships, restaurants and beaches it is set amongst the famous wineries of Hemel en Aarde. It is stylishly furnished, comfortable, and generously equipped. The rooms are large and there is a shaded outside stoep with a braai and a pool full of carp. Our host Tino was there to welcome us and on call next door if we needed anything. His beautiful dogs made us feel very secure and whilst the accommodation is private it doesn’t feel isolated. It is accessed down some quite steep steps for those who are less mobile. We parked our car in a reserved parking place at the top on the quiet road. Perfect for a relaxing weekend or for walking or cycling - or wine tasting.

A slice of heaven
Our second visit and we weren't disappointed. Lovely hosts, beautiful cottage. Ideally located for everything the Hemel en Aarde valley has to offer - Hamilton Russell, Bouchard Finlayson, Newton Johnson, Moggs, La Vierge etc. Just go!

Fabulous relaxing stay near Hermanus.
If you are looking to get away from the rush of life, you will really enjoy this lovely place. Peaceful, country life. The cottage is lovely, comfy beds, good kitchen, no oven, but excellent braii. If you are looking to stream Netflix you will be disappointed, but if starry nights, no mosquitoes, beautiful scenery are your thing then book this place. Fabulous hosts, helpful and kind.

Gorgeous horses and view.
Lovely rustic escape my highlight was the beautiful horses in a paddock flanking the cottage patio, perfect for a chilled evening braai. (I dropped one mug, apologies Tino!)

Heaven on Earth
What a glorious place. Gorgeous cottage, beautifully decorated with authentic furniture, fabrics, art and ornaments. Well equipped - easy to self-cater, braai, sun bathe, good WiFi. Very private place to stay but friendly hosts on hand to help if you need them. Animal/nature lover's paradise - beautiful gardens, wild birds, hiking and the owners' gorgeous Arabian horses and Golden Retriever dogs. Within reach of Hemel-en-Aarde's vineyards and restaurants but also a short hop from Hermanus town centre. Feels safe and secure. Highly recommended. Thank you Tino and Liane, you live in a beautiful part of the world.

Yes, we'll come back!
Let's start with some words of warning: that rooster has to crow for hours in the morning, the WiFi signal is super weak and the water is brown (yet drinkable). Done. About the assets, it is a charming, romantic and cozy cottage right next to Russell Hamilton vineyards. You will be surrounded by horses, chicken, dogs, ducks and we even had the pleasure of seeing Luna, Lela, Grace and Kate, four wonderful puppies, along with their mother and sister. We loved it there, relaxing at night next to the fire, chatting with Liane the owner and using the cottage as our base to discover Hermanus and the surrounding. We will come back, that's for sure. Of all the places we stayed at during our journey in Western Cape, this was the most special. Hard to talk about it without feeling like we should return right now.

Peace and quiet, great views and loved the animal life close by.
Friendly welcome by the Liane, A lovely surprise visit to the ducks, chickens and horses a couple of meters away from the cottage. A surprisingly cool cottage in the heat of the day. We loved the walks and the runs up to the top of the mountain overlooking Hermanus Town. The drive to the village in only 5 minutes and only a 3km drive to Hermanus beaches and town with lovely walks along the coastline. It beats a B&B or Hotel for a nice rustic stay. We will return soon. Thank you Tino and Liane.

How to get there
If you're traveling from Cape Town, it's easy: before you reach Hermanus, about 3 km out of town, there is a large intersection with traffic lights. On your left, you'll see a Great Wall. That 's the Hemel-en-Aarde Estate. Across the road there is an Engen garage (petrol station). You need to turn left, onto the R320, the Hemel-en-Aarde Road, away from the coast. 5 km along the road into the Valley, you'll see the entrance to Hamilton Russell Vineyards. About 300 m further, just before a long, low, whitewashed wall, a lttle tarred road leads right, off the R320. The GPS coordinates at this point are: -34.384246, 19.236674 -34° 23' 3.29", +19° 14' 12.03" Take this little road and stay on the tar. Do not turn off onto any dirt road. About 300 metres further you'll reach the only building, to your right. This is Earth Cottage.
