Cabin in the woods
We loved the Grasshopper lodge. They had everything we needed and then some. The place was really clean for an 70 year old cabin, and the bed was very comfortable. Best bass fishing I’ve ever seen! Caught 7 fish the first afternoon we were there. The canoe and tandem kayak were very well maintained. Gas grill was almost new. The road in was very rough, but they warn you in advance. Our Dodge Journey has the same clearance as most minivans and it made it fine. Some sugar sand and some deep tire ruts so most cars would have trouble. We will definitely be back!

One word: "Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh"
Over many years, I've stayed in several cabins I would describe as "Charming", "delightful", "perfect", "romantic". Grasshopper Lodge just takes each adjective to it's next level. And David and Doris are both great people to work with. I booked this as a birthday getaway for my fiance and I wanted flowers on the table for her when we arrived. There is no florist in Astor and NOBODY would deliver to this location (see next paragraph). Through a truly heroic effort on the part of a flower shop in Pierson, the library in Astor and Doris' husband, a huge spectacular bouquet greeted her when we arrived. First you take a scenic drive through the Ocala Nat'l Forest, then down a country road. Next you're onto a long, narrow, rutted, un-maintained dirt road through dense vegetation. I expected to see the "T-Rex Paddock" on the right at any moment. I LOVED it, but you better bring a serious SUV or truck. Then we finally arrived at this perfect cabin deep in the woods to our right and the most picture-perfect lake on the left. There was the dock with two chairs so one could watch the sun both rise and set over the lake; both bolted to the dock I might add. There is no wifi, but there is cell service and this cabin really does have everything you need but clothes and food. And I do mean EVERYTHING. We explored the Ocala and hiked by day and stargazed at night under deep black skies (We brought a telescope specifically for this). The feel of the cabin and surrounding woods is more 'Maine' than 'Florida'. We loved it so much, we booked another stay before we even got home. I give it 5 Circles: O O O O O

Grasshopper lodge
What a wonderful stay our family had. The cabin was beautiful and clean and has everything you need other than groceries. Books, games, and an amazing movie selection are at the cabin for your enjoyment. We canoed a large portion of the lake and caught plenty of fish. There are lots of blue gill and bass! We never saw another person on the lake during our stay. Our family enjoyed going to Alexander springs to swim it is perfect for children. There are gas stations and a bait shop not too far. We cooked either on the stove or grill every day and never ate out. Also roasted s’mores on the fire outside and enjoyed a short hike. Be sure you have a four wheel drive truck as the driveway can be rough. Also be sure to check yourself for ticks each day. Thanks for an amazing time we will be back!

So happy with this lodge choice. Lake, springs, nature and solitude.
My favorite thing about this rental is the reflections on Grasshopper lake and the solitude. Sundown was the most picturesque. Daytime when the lake is calm, the mirror image is mesmerizing. Daybreak, hot coffee on the pier not a person for miles, only bird song and fish jumping.. soul refreshing. Cabin is beautiful, as described but the view has too be seen in person. Nice that the whole lodge including the bedroom, afford a great view of the lake. Road to cabin was rough but doable. A lot of unpaved but smooth roads in the area. Well worth exploring for lakes and wildlife. Astor is close by and has gas, groceries and a few restaurants. Springs, trails, parks, boating and anything to do with the outdoors abound in the area all year We will be back.

Amazing Getaway!!
Our stay at Grasshopper Lodge exceeded our expectations and is our favorite vacation ever!! The Lodge is pristine and the owners have thought of everything one might need. We enjoyed the bunnies, birds and wildlife as well as having a fire at night under the stars. The lake is great for catching wide mouth bass or kayaking and canoeing. Would highly recommend this for a quiet, serene getaway!

Awesome.
Fantastic, secluded cabin in the middle of the forest. You’re greeted by Doris who is lovely and very knowledgeable of the local area, but other than that you’re on your own which is fantastic. The cabin is spacious and air conditioned. There is plenty to keep you amused even though there’s no phone coverage or WiFi, you can hike, play games or watch TV or DVDs or my personal favourite thing which was just watching the wildlife from the window. Really lovely place to get away for a few days. My only teensy thing is that I like white towels and linen just so you can immediately see it’s clean. I have no doubt the stuff here was clean but that’s just a personal thing to me. Bring bug spray as there are plenty of you plan on being outside and also you’ll need a big car or 4x4 as the track to get there is pretty bumpy! None of this takes away from the great stay though.

Serene Cabin for Romantic Getaway
We just experienced our 10 year anniversary at this awesome cabin for another amazing week. It was magical ten years ago and it was magical again for our return visit. If you are looking for peaceful, secluded privacy: this is as good as it gets. We saw only a half-dozen or so other people during our week there. David, the owner, and Doris, the caretaker make a great team in managing the cabin. Doris was very respectful and considerate of our privacy but yet she was ready and available whenever we had a question or needed something. The cabin furnishings have a nice international flare, tastefully done, perhaps by a professional interior decorator. It is well-stocked with cookware, blender, toaster, toaster oven, microwave, coffee maker, even a burr coffee grinder. There is a first-rate leather couch and chair, 2 big flat-screens, and furnished screened-in porch facing the lake at the foot of the front yard. It has central heat & air and a wood-burning fireplace with ample supply of split oak. The firm Sealy Posturepedic Mattress is excellent. I caught large blue-gill in the lake and my partner spent hours and hours wandering around the area, enjoying the many birds with binoculars and camera. We love this cabin and we look forward to another future anniversary week.

Thanks for that great review, and so glad you had a great stay. In particular, I'm glad that returning after 10 years still fulfilled your expectations! And thanks for the huge compliment on my interior decorating - not a professional, but definitely a travel collector! Hope to have you back for the next big anniversary. All the best, David

MOST SERENE PLACE IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA
Just returned from my 9th stay at Grasshopper Lake Lodge! As always, I return restored & renewed. The peace & quiet & nature all around the cabin, just can't be beat! My husband compares it to the float plane fly-in trip we took to Ontario 13 years ago, & we sure had to go A LOT farther and spend A LOT more $$ to get there!! David keeps upgrading the comforts at the cabin & makes it the most welcoming & well appointed cabin in the woods! Up each morning before dawn with the bird's song...then a hike or canoe/kayak trip....bit of fishing ( don't worry, if you don't wish to go out on the lake, the bluegill & catfish will happily visit you at the dock! A nice lunch on the deck...then perhaps a nap...you want to be rested for the firefly show after dark...or to roast marshmallows by the fire & watch for the gray fox to visit! We always have the BEST & most relaxing time here! We have never returned so many times to the same vacation spot! So it HAS to be VERY SPECIAL!! Thanks, David! We are planning our 10th visit very soon....

another week in my favorite place!!
one foot inside the door, and you know you have arrived in a cherished dwelling. peace is all around. watching the sunset, or the occasional kayak or fisherman cruise by on the lake is so sweet. within a couple of days you sync with natures time-clock, and rise for coffee and daybreak. after the sunset, you can hear the old wood cabin creak a little as it cools in the night air, then you know its time to get comfy for the night. The cabin has every amenity, and all in good working order. Books games movies, cards, a couple of good "old movie" channels on TV take you back in time a little. when I am here I dont think about much, when I am back at work, I think about Grasshopper lodge!

Loved it!
Amazing secluded little cabin. The owner makes you feel like you're staying at a friends home, Stocked better than my own home, with things to do (i.e. kayak , canoe, movies, games, etc). My wife is already planning another trip to this cabin.

How to get there
The dirt road in to the cabin is a relatively poorly maintained Forest Service Road. At times it can be a bit rough – as in ruts, potholes, and rises and drops that would be difficult for a low slung car. If there is substantial rain, some of the larger dips in the road will fill with water, and can be 6-8” deep for 10 feet or so. As a result, we recommend that you leave your Porsche at home, and take the SUV, Pickup Truck, or Van for this adventure. If you have no such option available, let us know, and ask for an update on the current road conditions.
