Traumhafte Familienreise

a really lovely place, in a beautiful setting
The Ring of Kerry is just wonderful, and Waterville is a great base for visits to different parts of it, including Derrynane House (my ancestral home!) and the stunning Strand there, Skelling Michael, Valentia Island, and much more. So Fuschia Lodge was the perfect place from which to explore this glorious area. But it was also a great place just to sit and relax and admire the views, or to walk to the nearby headland. We didn't get to use the sauna, but the facilities were very good once we got a sun umbrella sorted - musch needed, which was unusual for Co. Kerry! The Smugglers Inn on the N side of Waterville, next to the Golf Course, is a must.

About the neighbourhood
Fuchsia Lodge is situated on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, overlooking Ballinskelligs Bay and surrounded by the McGillicuddy Reeks –Ireland’s highest mountain range. It is the ideal location to explore a wide and varied range of outdoor activities, including walking, surfing, golfing and angling. The southwest of Ireland is home to some of the worlds most renowned and prestigious golf courses - names like Waterville, Ballybunion, Tralee and Killarney are all ranked in the top courses in the world and are all within easy reach of Fuchsia Lodge. The area is also renowned for its diverse range of water based activities - enjoy a day kayaking with the chance to see dolphins or seals or explore the underwater gardens of the southwest, which offers some of the best and most renowned diving sites in Europe. The area is also home to a large number of Blue Flag Beaches, such as Derrynane, Ballinskelligs, the White Strand and Kells Beach. For the angler, visitors will be spoilt for choice. Anglers have been coming to Waterville for centuries to enjoy the lake and seashore angling, with trout and salmon the main favourites. Deep Sea Angling is also very popular with many prize specimens being caught every year off the coast of Valentia. For families, there are loads of attractions in the area - the renowned Skellig Experience Interpretive Centre provides information on the UNESCO Skelligs World Heritage Site. For those that would like to visit the site in person, boat trips depart from the centre and from Waterville and Portmagee. Other attractions in the area include Derrynane House and Gardens, The Old Barracks, Glanleam House, Cill Rialaig, Kells House & Gardens, The Staigue Fort & Ballycarbery Castle. There are numerous popular walking and cycling routes in the area, including the world famous 'Kerry Wawhich follows the coastline near Fuchsia Lodge and the spectacular 'Skellig Ring', which offers spectacular views of the coastline and Skellig Rocks. Waterville Golf Links Links land is a geological rarity. Less than one percent of all the courses in Ireland and the British Isles are championship links. Waterville is one of these. It is no wonder that the world’s best players test their mettle here. Golf at Waterville is a mystical experience – the beauty of classic links land, surrounded by the sea, yet forever challenged and shaped by the elements. Over 100 years old, Waterville is rated among the top 5 courses in Ireland and the top 20 links courses in the world. Links golf combines sand dunes gorse and native grasses, firm fairways, sod faced bunkers and subtle putting surfaces all intertwined by the ever changing weather. Forget the lob wedge. Think bump and run and creative shot making. Are you ready to walk in the footsteps of Irelands earliest golfers? Skellig Bay Golf Course Situated overlooking the magistic Ballinskelligs Bay and set among natural magalithic stonework and indigenous bog deal, there can be few more visually stunning locations for a golf couse than Skellig Bay in Waterville. The course opened for play in Spring 2006 and has already been rated in Irelands “Top 50”. Nestling in the shadows of the towering McGillicuddy Reeks, the golfer has to negotiate the river Fionnglass for the opening and closing holes but it is the stretch from six to sixteen that lives in memory long after the last putt has been sunk. Here the awesome beauty of the Bay hits you full in the face as you play through holes framed by over 8000 yards of ancient “famine” walls. Original standing stones from pre-christian times and a fairy fort all add to an unforgettable round as you experience an unbelievable feeling of another time and place.“Skellig Bay is full of challenging golf holes” says Sunday Independent Golf Correspondent Dermot Gilleece. The Skellig Experience In THE SKELLIG EXPERIENCE CENTRE you can experience many aspects of those offshore Skellig islands while remaining on the dry land, in a custom built, stone clad, grass roofed, prize winning building located right on the waterfront beside the Valentia Island bridge at Valentia, County Kerry! Here, through re-creations and models you can study the works and lives of the Skellig monks of the early Christian period, their activities, their endurance and their dedication in gaining a foothold on a tiny, inhospitable, offshore island and creating a community there that survived for some 600 years. In The Skellig Experience’s 80-seat auditorium, a 16-minute audio-visual presentation will take you in the footsteps of those Skellig monks, and wonder at the legacy of architecture that they left behind. In The Skellig Experience’s re-created Skellig sea cliff, with life-size models, you can get to know, by sight and sound, the life and times of the Skellig Monks. Fishing in WatervillWaterville is a Game and Sea Anglers paradise. The Lough Currane system includes five Loughs which offer the best Sea Trout fishing in Europe. Boats and/or Ghillies are availableThere is also a wealth of other places to fish in the general area for Salmon and Trout such as The Caragh system, The Laune and KillarneyGreat Lakes. For Shore anglers, there are many parts of Ballinskelligs Bay which are suitable for rock or surf fishing. In addition to the usual types of fish, Bass are readily taken and this can even be accomplished on a fly, an experience rarely forgotton. A great spot for Bass fishing is from the beach below Fuchsia Lodge or visit one of the many other surf beaches in the bay such as Waterville, Reenroe or Derrynane. The rocks towards hogs head regularly produce specimen Wrasse and Pollack as well as conger eels and Mackerel. These are just a walk away. Superb Deep Sea fishing is available for parties or individuals. Derrynane House & Gardens Derrynane House is the ancestral home of Daniel OConnell, lawyer, politician and statesman. Situated on 120 hectares of parklands on the scenic Kerry coast, the House displays many relics of OConnell s life and career. Access for visitors with disabilities to ground floor. The gardens are particularly spectacular and lead down to a blue flag beach. The planting is sub-tropical due to the mild climate thanks to the Gulf Stream. Location: 7 miles from Waterville
