My sister and I with our respective families decided to go to the Mournes this year. My wife being from Newcastle, has always wanted us to go their. We found Sandback in Kilkeel on Holiday Lettings (run by trip advisor).
My first contact with Diane was to ask a list of questions to which she responded quickly and comprehensively. There was no further contact after we booked until a week before we where due to arrive.
Diane ensured everything smoothly. When we arrived she had left a lovely welcome package. The house was stunning. It's not your typical rental, it's well finished, to a high standard and very comfortable. The house is situated in private grounds (gated with pin / fob access) and only contains three other units so peaceful and spacious.
The ground just outside the house was well maintained and Diane had left toys for all age groups.
To the end of the lane where you gain access to the house there is a pathway to the beach. It's secluded and whilst not the prettiest, provided for a relaxing walk in the evenings.
Youll notice some of the pathways are lined with concrete slabs to make walls. Interesting story, the fields surrounding the house used to be part of an American airforce base and when bought back after decommissioning, the runway was broken up and used for walls.
Anyway back to the house. Four spacious well appointed double rooms. Two excellent bathrooms with showers, a very well appointed kitchen and two living rooms. Great when the kids want to watch something different.
The TV in the main room has freeview play and smart features with Netflix and nowtv apps.
The house is warm. We where there for a week, with not the best weather everyday and never needed the heating on, just to boost water.
From the four houses (plus a bungalow situated to the left) only two are rented and family live in the other to. They are very hospitable and can't do enough to help you.
As a base it's great, 5 minutes from Kilkeel, 15 minutes from Newcastle. You'll pass Bloddy Bridge on the way there. Stop and go explore. It looks so unassuming from the road but walk down the hill and you'll discover a river flowing from the mountains and a rocky shore line. It was our most enjoyable place along with tollymore forest.
It was great to return home to the private grounds and peace away from traffic and residential noise.
I can't tell you how much we truly enjoyed this break. The house and its surroundings are perfect to relax and chill. You can hear the rids, listen to the sea, sit outside on the wodden deck or play in the grounds at the front of the house.
Diane and her family are exceptional hosts. Nothing is too much trouble, I highly recommend moving away from Newcastle and even Kilkeel just a few extra miles is worth it.
We will be back next year.
