Just 2 KM from Bir & Billing in Kangra Valley, this is a boutique hotel with a magical twist: an old merchant's house once totally destroyed by fire, it has been painstakingly and aesthetically restored blending traditional style and materials with contemporary sensitivity, offering you an unique living experience in the middle of a Himalaya village without compromising on comfort. The 4Rooms is intentionally set away from the larger tourist centres in the vicinity so that you can experience, in a responsible manner, our 'un-touristy' village and the pristine surroundings and mingle with the villagers not yet accustomed to tourist manners. Access to other places in the valley is easy (walking, cycling, cabs etc) yet you are not in the middle of it! Amazing Experience
One of the best stays. Perfect decor with amazing staff and food. The hospitality and cleanliness is maintained. The rooms have different themes and almost all the amenities one needs for a perfect stay. They have beautiful sitting areas, and again the unmatched decor makes the vibe of the place Highly Recommended for family and couples!! Amazing food . Loved the pizzas.

Rustic charm, modern amenities and ever-smiling people!
Loved our stay at the 4rooms property. We were a group of 11 youngsters who had booked the entire property. Situated right in the middle of Gunehar village, this property cannot be compared with typical hotels and homestays which you will find in abundance in Bir. It's a mud-wooden restored village house, must I say beautifully and tastefully decorated. Has hot water throughout, and 3/4 bathrooms even have a bathtub. The common area boasts of a tented bed, which is perfect to catch a sweet afternoon nap. Breakfast was included in our tariff, and boy, it was delicious. All food is home-cooked by the caretaker, Ms. Suman. Always smiling, she is a local who is more than happy to accommodate your needs. We even tried the food being served at the 4Tables cafe, and it does not disappoint. All produce seemed fresh, resulting in flavorful food. We did not meet the host, Mr. Frank. Based on our conversations over cell, must say he is quite friendly. Walk right out of the house, and you can have a stroll through the village. Interact with locals, look at their quaint houses, admire the village animals and you shall have a fulfilling day. Bir river is a short 10 minute walk away. Bir town and landing site takes 15-20 minutes by car. Would recommend this place for quiet-loving people who want to escape their boring mundane routine. Can easily stay here for 2-3 nights.

We reached out to Ritu of Ease India Travel to put together an itinerary for Himachal. We have traveled with her before, so we were confident she'd get it right. We flew into Dharamsala and drove for nearly 3 hours to reach this tiny village called Gunehar which is almost on the edge of nowhere. But its proximity ( barely half hour's drive) to Bir which is a bustling town and to Billing which is the mecca for paragliders for take- off ( about 14 km) rubs off on Gunehar as well. The 4 Tables Hotel is in Gunehar. Supposedly a restored mud house. Frank who owns the place said he did it ' because it needed to be restored'. As the name suggests, it has four rooms, three on the first floor, one on the ground floor. Our room was probably the best both in size and amenities. The room is basic basic with just a bed and mattress. But our bathroom had a bathtub! We were told there were solar heaters, so we'd have hot water in the shower. We spent four nights there, except for the first night, there was no hot water. But there was always water. For food you had to walk 500 meters to 4 Tables Cafe. Suman is his second in command and a super woman. She seems to multitask so much beyond a point no one else existed for us. Whilst her heart is in the right place and her intent is good, culinary skills is not her strong point. Bread was underbaked, egg and vegetables were overcooked and food in general was loaded with salt. There's supposed to be wifi but no one gave us the password. Hygiene was a question mark, the day we checked in, we were greeted by a huge spider's web in the bathroom. The day we checked in, nobody was there to greet us and open the door for us. Suman came almost after 20 minutes. A trek was supposed to have been organised with camping overnight. But when we were briefed about the camping facility ( no water or electricity or even toilet facilities)we opted for a day trek. There was no warmth in the welcome. Even on the day we left, no one saw us off. This is supposed be an Airbnb property in the superhost category. We are regular Airbnbers across the world and we stay only with superhosts, but this experience was hugely wanting compared to the previous ones. It's a good thing we were not looking for peace and quiet because literally from the first day there was so much drilling and hammering going on till pretty late in the night as the cafe was being shifted to the garden on this property.

Comfortable stay
Enjoyed our stay at 4rooms. Amazing food . Loved the pizzas. Thank you so much for taking care of our vegan member. Frank and aloke are wonderful hosts. Frank helped us in getting safe pilots and little aloke took us trekking to waterfall and river. Will certainly come back soon.

Idyllic Getaway
There was a tad bit of a chaos during the check in, but Frank was nice enough to take onus of the goofup and make us comfortable in a very short period of time. The property certainly is home away from home. Comfortable, Clean, Picturesque and a getaway from the madness of city life, still not too far from most eateries and things to do. His team is extremely helpful, cheerful and well trained. Hospitality can be felt from within. The place brings out your artistic side and you will want to extend your stay, just for this I wish to revisit again, very soon. We were lucky to visit during the art festival and walked up hill and through the bylanes of Gunehar witnessing lovely installations, cheerful conversations and some theatre at the end. Soul satisfying. I must not forget the food, we were travelling through Dharamsala and the surrounding areas for about six days before we reached this getaway, pleasantly surprised with the food and service. Clean, efficient and good food. Excellent baked bread, flavourful, clean food and cheery staff definitely made the stay very pleasant.

Comfort of a city hotel with a rustic charm
Your heart warms up the moment you step into the earthy room. Beautiful and peaceful -the mind relaxes and the soul is nourished. An interesting art shop , a month long celebration of different art forms is coming up in May/June 2019.

A getaway nestled in heaven thats Himachal.
I always wanted to visit Himachal for all i heard about its beauty and its simple folks and rather still untouched soul. I was planning to visit Dharmshala but for some uncanny last minutle change of plans i planned instead to go to bir. Staying at Frank's place was like some gold mine i stuck, as i never intended to stay at his place in first place. Mud house was awesome and carefully draped pastel shades curtains were minimalist but were all that was needed for our stay. We did not have electricity for a night as meter tripped due to heaters working overtime in all rooms but actully we did not care to switch back electricity on. And, enjoyed a night sans electricity. Night time sky was full of stars and amazingly beautiful. More than all, i enjoyed his cooking. Pasta was fragrant with rosemary and basil and cooked with all subtlety, though i suspect this was something of a routine cook for him. Trout was delicate, juicy and dripping with taste. All in all we loved our stay at his place and would someday like to go back to his place again. P.S. Suman ji was awesome too.

Staycation Goals for Gypsy Souls – A Mudhouse Homestay in Bir Billing
Being through and through city people we had only seen mud houses. This time we lived in one – 4Rooms. Tucked in the cool Gunehar village in Himachal, 4Rooms is a designer mud house with all modern facilities. Including a hot bath tub. We soaked in all the fantabulous luxuries – material as well as cerebral – that this property had to offer. Trivia – while we drove up this time, next trip we are going to hop on the overnight government bus that plies straight from Delhi to Bir that is 5 minutes from this place. Our meals were at 4Tables a cafe cum art shop run by the same people just a few steps from the homestay.

Quaint , tasteful and a charming getaway
I first visited Franks cafe in October on a long weekend getaway from Delhi . We were not staying with him but made it for the famous Saturday Pizza night and were absolutely in love with the vibe , ambience & pizzas . We ended up there for lunch one more time while we were there and got a chance to they cosy 4 room stay and i knew just then that i had to come again and stay there. As luck would have it in June a bunch of my cousins & family decided to come to Delhi from all over and i suggested we go stay at Franks and book the whole place. So this time around i got the whole package - staying in the tastefully done up rooms , which were absolutely equipped with everything required. From toiletries to odomos bathroom slippers , french press with great coffee , bath tub and water with great pressure , Tek chand with his wonderful smile and hospitality. All in all it was an absolute delight and everybody loved it - the whole family had a great time . Frank even made an exception and did pizza night for us on sunday cause we were a big crowd and it was the most beautiful intimate candle lit table setting . THANK YOU Frank , Suman and Tek chand ! I will be back :D

About the neighbourhood
Gunehar is predominantly a village of Gaddis and Bara Bhangalis, whose original homes are further in the interiors of the mountains, beyond the Dhauladhar Range. Since most of these people are semi-nomadic shepherds, and since the extremely cold winters cut off their villages from the Indian mainland for more than half a year, they have traditionally had winter dwellings on the southern slopes of the Himalaya such as Gunehar. The village is, despite many traces of modernisation, still very laid back and original, with warm inhabitants. It is close to a beautiful stream, water falls, and great walking treks that are mostly free of tourists. The more prominent Bir (2KM) and Bir Colony (4KM) are just a stone throw KM away.
