Superb
Never had such a fantastic holiday. Accommodation second to none. Alison and Keith were fantastic. Walks for the dogs form the farm were abundant. Would recommend to anybody with dogs.

Exceptional value, comfortable, quiet location, friendly, hospitable owner
This cottage is wonderful. It is very rare to find something this good at this price. You won't be disappointed if you book. The place is clean, comfortable, well equipped and warm. It is located in a quiet location just outside a small village. Alison is happy to help with any queries or anything you need to make your stay a good one. All the 5 star reviews are well earned due to her hard work and genuine hospitality. Truly cannot think of anything that could be faulted. County Durham is a beautiful place, we recommend visiting High Force waterfall, and there are many great walks everywhere. Middleton on Teesdale is also a very pretty area to visit nearby. If you want a peaceful, relaxing holiday but you are on a budget, then this will more than fit the bill. A real gem of a place. We haven't managed to return yet but really hope one day we will.

A very comfortable enjoyable stay
We visited in September 2020, and spent a very enjoyable and comfortable week at Swallows Nest. With local restrictions being asked for by local authorities Alison telephoned us on the day before our anticipated arrival to reassure us, and this was very welcome. Alison has previously received 100% cleanliness certification, and at present she is doing extra cleaning between bookings and operating ‘fire breaks’ such that the cottage is vacant between guests. Special arrangements are in place for a Covid-secure stay including a dedicated single wheelie bin in the cottage garden, for all rubbish from the cottage to go into, such that the bin isn’t being used by anyone else. We arranged a supermarket delivery to the cottage for the evening we arrived so we had food for the week. Alison made clear that we were in control of whether or not we wanted the heating on, and could turn it on or off ourselves as we needed. Fuel and unlimited good wifi are included in the price. We only used one of the bedrooms (with a double bed) and its en-suite shower/WC. There is a twin bedded room at the other end of the cottage which has its own en-suite bathroom/WC. The kitchen is well-equipped, and there is a parking space outside the cottage front door. The cottage, all on one level, is close to the farm house on a working farm and it is a delight to see geese and chickens, sheep, horses and cattle around the cottage. As well as a DVD player by the TV (with Sky), there are lots of board games and toys around in boxes and cupboards to keep people entertained, if they are needed. There is a comprehensive folder available with instructions for the appliances, details of local facilities etc. There’s a land line telephone for incoming calls, and a system allowing for outgoing calls to be paid for, although we didn’t use the ‘phone. On the notice board in the kitchen we discovered a free pass allowing use of the forest drive and parking at Hamsterley Forest which is six or seven miles away. If you decide to use this Alison will enter your vehicle registered number on the Forestry England web site before you go. There’s also a free pass to nearby Raby Castle for guests’ use, which allows free entry and discounts at Raby. It also allows free entry to view the impressive waterfall at High Force. Having been before we didn’t go to High Force but instead this time went to Low Force and Summerhill Force. Alison is on hand if needed and encouraged us to contact her if we needed anything. Her mobile ‘phone number and Keith’s number are readily available. Highly recommended.

Cosy Cottage
We stayed at Swallow’s Nest cottage for a short break. We were cosy and comfortable (it was freezing outside!) and made to feel very welcome by Alison. The cottage was well-appointed and spotlessly clean. We would definitely stay again if we were in the area.

Thank you so much for your review. We have had a 100% cleanliness rating with VistiEngland for the last 2 years which, under the current climate, is paramount to us and our guests' safety and welfare. It was also lovely to read that you would stay with us again and we look forward to seeing you back here in the future :)

Amazing stay in a beautiful cottage!
We stayed at Swallows Nest Cottage over Christmas and we had an amazing time there. Alison and Keith are fantastic hosts and they couldn’t do enough to make our stay wonderful. They were next door and available throughout our stay. The cottage is just lovely; 2 big bedrooms, 2 big bathrooms, large kitchen and wonderful lounge. Gorgeous views from every window! The cottage is really well equipped with absolutely everything you could ever need! And many more things I didn’t even think I could need, but then needed (sandwich bags, foil etc)!! Lovely dog walks on the doorstep, and a farm full of animals all around you. Perfect! We would highly recommend the cottage and will definitely return. Thanks for having us!

The best of everything for a wheelchair user.
This is a wonderful place to stay if you are disabled. The cottage is fantastic every aspect is thoughtful and we'll designed. The hosts are great too! It is worth a lot more than the price and I really want to stay again. The surrounding area is splendid. Loved Bernard Castle and Beamish museum is one of the very best in England (though can be busy these days) All in all this was a perfect week. Thanks!

LOVELY PLACE TO STAY
This warm and cosy self contained cottage is located on a lovely working farm. It is well equipped, having two en-suite facilities is a real advantage, as is being able to park the car right outside the front door. There are good walks from the cottage but nowhere is far from Swallows Nest. Alison, the owner, made us feel welcome on our recent stay and was particularly helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed our break and aim to return.

About the neighbourhood
Swallows Nest is ideally situated to explore all of Barnard Castle and Bishop Auckland. It is situated close to the picturesque village of Cockfield and right on the verge of Cockfield Fell, Britain's largest protected common land area. It was once home to hundreds of miners but is now full of wildlife with curlews, buzzards and the occasional kestrel.Located close to Hamsterley Forest, part of the Dark Skies initiative, the farm is also cloaked in darkness during the winter evenings. This makes it ideal for stargazing.
Getting around
The most convenient way to see our local area is by car. We would recommend you hire a car or be prepared to have fun walking around the sights and scenery of Cockfield.

How to get there
When you arrive in the area,go down the hills on either side of the village of Low Lands and we are immediately left/right opposite the village sign. There are two stone pillars to the farm entrance. Go down the lane and we'll be there to meet you. Parking is dedicated and immediately outside the cottage. If you are bringing 2 cars then that's no problem either as there's space for you all!
