About the neighbourhood
The Lake District National Park (19.2 miles to the northern end and 39 miles from Keswick) is England's largest National Park. It includes Scafell Pike - its highest mountain, Wastwater - its deepest lake, and thriving communities like Keswick and Bowness-on-Windermere. Lanercost Priory (6.6 miles) was founded in approx 1169 as an Augustinian monastery. It was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1536 during the dissolution of the monasteries. Parts of the original foundation survive and are open to the public run by English Heritage. There is an excellent Tea Room adjacent to the Priory serving delectable light lunches, fine wines and afternoon teas, yummy flapjacks, gorgeous home-made cakes and great coffee. All meals are freshly prepared from the finest local produce seven days a week. Dumfries ...
