17th Century farmhouse set in 25 acres of gardens, with superb views over the Douro River, reached by a lovely winding track through the grounds. The property, with its orange, lemon and olive groves, has been in our family for several generations and the many prints, sketches and photographs lining the walls tell their own history of the Port Wine region of Portugal. The property is 70km from the coast and Porto (home of the Port Wine cellars and with its town centre designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site). Nearby, there is also a thermal retreat which offers spa treatments. The self-catering farmhouse is set in large grounds with orange and lemon trees and overlooks the river and mountain. It sleeps 8 in 4 bedrooms, has 2 bathrooms, a fully fitted modern kitchen, all linen and towels are provided including pool towels. It is perfect for families and family groups. The pool is for the sole use of the guests, and it has private parking and access. There is a gas barbecue at the back of the house with a canopy for shade, and at the front of the house a new pergola to create a comfortable dining area. COVID-19 Information We want you to enjoy your stay at Quinta do Loureiro and so during these challenging times we assure you that we will be doing everything that we can to make sure that the house is safe for you. We are following the sanitary rules that have been specified by the Portuguese health authorities, Direção Geral da Saúde. The house will be thoroughly deep cleaned between all guest bookings, including all surfaces and bathroom areas. All bed linen and towels will be laundered at a high temperature. Our cleaning staff will wear PPE and wash their hands frequently. They will not be allowed to work if they have Covid-19 symptoms. They will only come to the house to clean when there are no guests staying. The property is an hour drive from Porto City and close to Port Wine Estates. It is served by the Douro Train Line. There are lovely restaurants and well-stocked supermarkets close by. This is the perfect place for nature lovers, writers, historians, wine lovers and everybody that needs a break from hectic city life! The owner lives on the farm at a house which is reached from a different track. He will happily provide assistance during your entire stay concerning directions and other information which will help you to enjoy the area such as restaurants and places to visit. In addition, your host will be delighted to arrange guided sightseeing or wine tasting tours throughout Douro Valley’s Port Wine producing estates with lunch and transport included. He can also give information on local amenities, shops and restaurants. The boat cruises from Régua to Pinhão and back (with optional lunch on board) are highly recommended to see the Douro Valley and the owner can book these for you. From Régua he can recommend bus trips to visit wonderful views of the area and local Port wine producers to taste the famous Port wine produced at Douro Valley. The house is served by train, with a main station close the house. We recommend a train trip to Régua or Pinhão or further to admire all of the Douro Valley. All the information is available at the house, or just ask. There is also a possibility of transfer from/to Porto airport by previous arrangement and at low cost. We have details of local taxi companies and offer a package to our guests who prefer not to drive. Just ask for details. The check-in time can be flexible. When you arrive, Francisco the owner will be waiting for you to give you the keys and give you details that you need to know about the house. Quinta do Loureiro closes for the season in mid-October and re-opens mid-April for regular holiday bookings. However, the property is available during this period for longer lets of over three weeks. Simply beautiful and unforgettable
I visited the property in September at harvest time, the landscape is simply one of the most spectacular the Douro valley has to offer, the place is breathtaking. The old house and the surrounding landscape enhance the stay. Francisco is a unique host who makes the experience even more fantastic. Highly recommended

A amazing stay in a unique ancient home overlooking the river and hosted by a one-of-a-kind host
We came in October, when the leaves are changing color and the air is soft, and had the most amazing experience. The ancient house, the surrounding trees, the stunning view, the quiet, and, above all, Francisco's warm hospitality. Francisco is such a unique host; sensitive to all your needs but makes sure not to be imposing. For Francisco each visitor is an entire world and he meets his guests with curiosity, kindness, and a sense of giving. Highly recommended Ruth and Ari Feldman

Unsurpassable beauty
If you are considering a post-lock down trip to Portugal then look no further than this magnificent property. It has a commanding and enchanting view of the river below and the beautiful mountains beyond. We had a wonderful family holiday here. There is so much to do on site, relaxing by the pool, picking oranges from the orchard and eating evening meals from the spectacular terasse. Francesco is the most charming and obliging host. He went out of his way to ensure we enjoyed our stay and got the most of what the locality has to offer. River trips, mountain villages and towns, fiestas etc. There is much to enjoy and appreciate. But mostly you will be pinching yourselves every time you look at the view!

A mile of breathtaking beauty and an owner who goes the extra mile.
The house is on 25 acres and Francisco lives in a house next door that is close enough for him to be available, but far away enough to provide privacy for his guests. This house outside of Porto was in itself, as a property, already stunning and had a warm feeling of home. But then, there is Francisco, who 1) set up a taxi ride so that we could go to a Wine museum, the winery Quinta Da Pacheca and grocery shopping, 2) set up a boat ride on the Duoro and explained how the trip involved train travel and 3) shared his homemade brandy with us. Also, during our stay, we found black salt in the house and fruitlessly tried to find it in nearby grocery stores. On the last day, Francisco handed my sister-in-law the black salt that she had been looking for. Definitely deserves an encore. Carlos

Gracious and beautiful old farmhouse with the best views.
Built in 1680 this stunningly atmospheric old house commands wonderful views of the Douro valley. Our host Francisco helped us a lot with winery recommendations (Quinta da Pacheca - fab food as well as amazing wine), plus being a font of knowledge regards port wine in general. He also drove us to the local store on our first night so we could stock up on groceries Very relaxing and peaceful house, beautifully furnished too. Do make use of Mosteiro train station (8 min drive) to visit Porto and it's famous port lodges (downriver) and Pinhao and Regua (upriver where the best wineries are). Best local food is steak at Aver o Douro.

Breathtaking Views!
We went to the Douro Valley Farmhouse last week with another couple. Getting there seemed to be a bit of a challenge but when we got there, we quickly forgot about that! This place has breathtaking views of the Douro Valley and the place was spotless. Francesco is a great host and booked the most amazing wine tour we have ever had. We did the Pacheca Wine Tour and drove there ourselves - although he will arrange transportation, if needed. Pros: The views, cleanliness, pool area and history of the property were all a plus Cons: The beds were a bit too hard for our liking. Enjoy your stay there - hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Magique

A fantastic retreat after the hustle & bustle of big cities
What do you say when an Aussie couple, a Canadian couple (expat Aussies) and an Irish couple stay at the Duoro Valley Farmhouse? Fantastico! The pictures advertising the views from the house are genuine and you will marvel over the serenity of the valley below over multiple bottles of Vino Tinto. The pool area was brilliant and spotlessly clean and the kitchen well appointed for cooking with a dishwasher. Gas barbecue which we used. Their is a washing machine, dryer and iron. One well appointed bathroom and one much smaller bathroom. Keep in mind this house is hundreds of years old, so don’t come expecting a luxury villa and you won’t be disappointed. 4 bedrooms with small double beds (pillows a little ordinary) Wifi, small sitting area, but good sized dining table. Francisco our host was very gracious, particularly when we turned up late in the afternoon without having done our shopping. Thanks Francisco for taking us on a 30 minute guided tour to the nearest supermarket (note there is a very small shop with a few basics 4 minutes drive away). Francisco organised a driver Manuel to take us in his 7 seater van (120 euros for the day) to a winery and a beautiful restaurant Doc (winery was awesome and Doc was the best meal we have in Portugal - but the price may not be for everyone’s wallet so make sure you are comfortable with this before going at over 50 euros each). I would consider this a must do. Railway runs past the house (10 minute walk to station), but better to drive 10 minutes to a bigger station with more regular stopping trains. Ideal for travelling into Porto. We went the other direction and to be honest, wouldn’t bother. The house is on about 20 acres and if you need a bit of exercise walking down the steep hill and back a few times will do the trick. When you drive in, don’t panic the directions are correct and keep to the left and you can’t go wrong (there is a house at the end of the track). Finally, if any of your party suffers car sickness, take your Kwells 40 minute before arriving and before visiting the wineries. After doing Lisbon, Seville, Valencia and Barcelona, this was the perfect place to rest and relax before continuing our month long holiday.

Fantastic views of the Douro river
Francisco is a great host who knows a lot about the area which really helps to the most out of your holiday. The house is situated on the best spot along the river with the most beautiful views. Although it was built centuries ago it is well maintained and very comfortable. Real value for money!

About the neighbourhood
Quinta do Loureiro is situated in a stunning location in the Douro valley. Rural área, overlooking the river with amazing views of the mountains. Good local restaurants, good wines and all at extremely reasonable prices for superb quality. Cities like Porto , Braga, Guimarães, Régua and Lamego are highlights to visit. You can take a boat trip from Régua to the Spanish border, a one day tour which is a very scenic trip. At Porto you can visit the Port Wine Cellars, the Livraria (library) Lello, made famous by the Harry Potter films and step back in time at the Majestic Cafe. Visit the superb modern Casa da Musica and have wonderful seafood meals near the river at Ribeira Square. The house is served by the Douro Line train.
Getting around
Quinta do Loureiro is situated in a stunning location in the Douro valley. Because of its fairly remote location – although it is only about an hour’s drive to Porto – we have always advised guests to hire a car. Recently however, we have realised that some people might like the option to use taxis, or a combination of public transport and taxis. After all, the main railway line from Porto stops at a station just a five minute taxi ride away! So, we have put together a selection of possible taxi rides and excursions. All prices are as of late 2022, but are subject to change. We can provide many other ideas for trips out by train or taxi in the local area – and further afield. Please ask for more details.
