Excellent, relaxing apartment in superb grounds
We really enjoyed our stay in the Magnolia apartment. As another reviewer has said, it is much more spacious than the pictures suggest - perhaps because the bed is 6ft wide! It is open plan except for the toilet/shower room which is separated by a sliding door. Magnolia stays quite cool as it is on the ground floor of a substantial stone-built quinta. We ate outside for most meals, under the shade of a banana tree and a large umbrella. The terrace faces the sea, with views to the harbour. The upper balcony was a superb place to sit and watch the fireworks displays on the Saturday evenings during our stay. The local bread shop and mini-market served us well. The bread shop has superb custard tarts, and also pre-cooked sweet potatoes which are delicious cold. We cooked evening meals of fish several times - not easy with just two rings and a microwave, but we managed OK. We ate out twice at O Tasco - superb food; reserve an outside table. We also ate at the Seasons hostel restaurant - again superb meals at very modest prices. The walk to the old town takes about 10 minutes, down hill. The uphill return was strenuous but by the end of our stay we were taking it in our stride, so to speak. The No. 31 bus stops right outside the quinta if you don't fancy the walk. We enjoyed several swims in the quinta's pool which, by the evening, was quite comfortably warm. We spent our time exploring Funchal, visiting gardens, taking a catamaran trip to see dolphins, and levada walking. The location was absolutely fine for all these activities, with the bonus of being comfortably remote from the bustle of the town centre. When we went on an excellent Flora Minibus tour to Porto Moniz, where we swam in the lava pools, we were picked up from and returned to the quinta. In summary, Magnolia was perfect for our needs; quiet, comfortable, well-located. We would not hesitate to return or recommend to other travellers.

Magnolia, Quinta Esperança, Funchal
We have just returned to the UK after our second stay in The Magnolia apartment at Quinta Esperança, and after just two visits this special place feels like home from home. This is mainly due to the unique hosts, Helena and Roberto and their first rate assistant, Carla. They are all warm and welcoming, are eager to look after you and make you feel like you are their number one guests. They efficiently organised transport to and from the airport and provided a lovely welcome pack of things like bread and wine. The Quinta is a little way out of the old part of Funchal in a residential area. It has wonderful gardens, full of interesting flowers, fruit trees and birds and has lots of quiet places to sit and enjoy the peace and tranquility. The pool is well maintained and a great place to relax. Magnolia is one of five apartments each designed for two people so even if every apartment is occupied it never seems crowded. The apartment itself is attractively furnished and very comfortable for two. It is clean and well equipped and Helena and Roberto will do anything they can to provide anything else you might need. There is reliable wifi. The Quinta is a magnificent traditional house with great character and Helena and Roberto are restoring it with real flare and imagination. One of the best features is the second floor terrace area, reached by a spiral staircase, which has fantastic views over Funchal and the harbour. There is a great bakery with excellent coffee and cakes and a smallish supermarket a few minutes walk away. Getting to town is a downhill walk and if you don't want to walk back taxis are easy to find and cheap - €5 from town back to the Quinta. There is also a regular bus service, in both directions, from outside the gate. All in all the Quinta, and Magnolia, were a perfect base for a great holiday. We would highly recommend it. The most wonderful terrace of Madeira
The magnolia appartment is located in an old quinta that has been superbly restored by the owners Helena and Roberto. The quinta lies in a quiet neighbourhood only ten minutes walking from the city centre of Funchal. From the terrace of the quinta, or the gallery on the topfloor, you have a magnificent view of the city and the ocean. You can even see the cruise ships in the harbour.
The owners were very friendly: small presents like cake, homemade confiture, avocados from the tree in the garden..they made us feel very welcome.
Funchal is a lovely city with beautiful houses, many restaurants and of course gorgeous gardens.

Surpassed all our expectations!
The Magnolia apartment is on the ground floor of a beautiful old Quinta in the old part of Funchal,well away from the modern hotels.Roberto and Helena along with Karla were very caring hosts.The directions there from the airport were spot on.The whole Quinta and gardens are obviously very loved,Karla even suprised us with a home made cake for my birthday mid holiday,a lovely gesture.We hired a car,easy parking across the road but if you wanted to,the local buses(very good service) stop just outside the entrance.We would not hesitate to stay there again and this was our 6th visit to Madiera.Its really nice to be able to stay in a Quinta that still retains its old world charm and not had it lost to "modern improvements".

Quinta heaven
A lovely way to spend time in Maderia experiencing a traditional Quinta. Beautiful gardens and a pool away from the hustle and bustle of town but near enough to walk. There is a bus stop just outside if needed. Great terrace up an old fashioned spiral staircase with views of the sea and surrounding areas. The owners are extremely helpful and will do their best fulfil any requests. Nice touch of welcome gifts on arrival too.

Sharing In a Vision of Funchal Perfection
In advance we knew the location was promising, the value looked good and the reviews were all 5 star. The communications turned out to be excellent, the welcome on arrival was effusive and the first impressions brilliant. And from there on it just got better.
It is sometimes possible that detailed research, choices and then good fortune can result in a close to perfection holiday location and experience. And on this occasion encouraged by the comprehensive reviews of others we pretty much hit our own jackpot. It helps of course to discover a quite beautifully restored Quinta and grounds in the right location, with just 5 delightful individually furnished/decorated apartments and that the genial hosts are truly committed to do their utmost to provide a relaxing and stress-free environment. We loved Qinta Esperanca and we departed full of admiration for the efforts of Helena and Robert, what they have achieved and their plans for the future.
The Quinta is a few hundred mtrs up the hill from the old town, a ten minute brisk walk down to the start of the restaurants. The hills are rather steep however so it could be a good 20 minute walk back or more likely an easy 5 euro taxi ride. For day trips there is a regular bus service from Funchal to the Botanic Gardens with bus stops in both directions just outside the Quinta gates. The result of the location is fabulous views over Funchal and the harbour especially from the superb upstairs terrace open to all guests. But as ever it is the thoughtful extras which add delights:
- sunloungers, chairs and shades around a well maintained pool
- attractive garden areas
- a welcome pack of wine, water and biscuits
- table and chairs for breakfast/meals outside each apartment
- a furnished terrace area up a winding staircase
And we were fortunate also to benefit from regular chats with Helena who was keen to ask if all was well. And Roberto showed us his collection of restored motorbikes.
This was our fourth visit to Madeira all focused on walikng the levadas and this was undoubtedly our best accommodation. I confess that more than any other visit we eagerly looked forward to returning home to the Quinta and pool and either home cooking or walking down the hill to the nearby excellent O Tasco restaurant.
We so recommend this experience.

Peaceful,restful and tranquil!
We stayed 14 days in this studio apartment but with plenty of room,facilities inclued a two ring hob and a microwave which was adequate for cooking simple meals. A large fridge freezer. On arrival we were greated with fuit,water,fruit juice, biscuits and beer. Halfway through are stay a bottle of wine and a homemade cake appeared. Helena, Roberto and Carla were friendly and welcoming and contributed to the enjoyment of our stay. Situated a 10 minute walk from Funchal old town down steep and winding roads with no footpath most of the way, for two 77 year olds very fraught. Nonetheless we found that walking to the first crossroads and turning right there was a wide footpath which was a gentle walk into Funchal.There is a bus stop outside the property and the single fare costs 1.95 Euros. Taxis cost 5 Euros and there are always plenty passing and these cost 5 Euros and slightly more in the late evening.If you plan to travel around you can buy a bus pass which is good value and can be used for as many trips as you like in the urban area it covers. An app such as Moovit provides bus times etc.

Not like the pictures
I am afraid that this location is isolated and directly on to a narrow road with no pedestrian walkway.
Booked for 2 weeks but ended up moving out after 2 nights.
The pictures shown do not represent the state of the place when we got there and we have photographs to prove this although the owner,Helena, is a lovely person.
We stayed in the Magnolia apartment but did not like sharing with the cockroaches and ants. The place needs a total refurb and a permanent caretaker/maintenance man on the site to keep the place clean
We can't believe some of the reviews which have been given

I am very supprised to read the comment left 16th November. We arrived yesterday 18th November and had booked Magnolia for a week several months ago. The place is exactly as described on the Internet, very clean and well looked after. We can not find anything to complain about, no matter how hard we try. The road is very steep as this whole area but it was hardly miss described and if it wasn't like that we wouldn't have such magnificent views. We are really enjoying our stay at Magnolia and would happily recommend it others.

A truly wonderful unique experience!
We had a fabulous relaxing holiday in the Magnolia apartment , part of this magnificent Quinta & gardens. The apartment is clean, comfortable & well-appointed. Roberto & Helena the owners, alongside their assistant Carla are the perfect hosts. They make you feel so at home & go to all lengths to ensure your perfect stay. Their kindness & hospitality is second to none & nothing is a problem. The Quinta is located uphill from the main town with good bus links & cheap taxi rides. We actually preferred the 10 min walk down to town & back which is fairly easy. The uphill location of the Quinta provides fantastic views of the city both day & night- particularly from the upper terrace. We loved relaxing by the poolside which is a sun -trap, & enjoyed just walking through the gardens which are carefully tended. We definitely intend to return to Funchal & would only stay at this wonderful place. Thank you so much Roberto,Helena & Carla!
