The Lake District in the sunshine. Our farmhouse, Casa Lido is situated in a rugged hamlet of white washed stone cottages set among ancient Oak and Olive Trees. Silveira's population, of just 9 residents enjoy a rural life of tranquility surrounded by lush valleys running down to river Tegus. Here, you explore the many tracks and trails leading from our village or delve further afield to the limestone shards of the Serra de Estrela's 2000m peaks, where you can experience challenging walks leading to a craggy paradise of mossy waterfalls, granite caves and river estuaries fit for summer swimming. If you are looking for total escapism out of the rat race to relax in peace, quiet and tranquility this is the place for you. It’s arguably the most quintessentially Portuguese part of the country little touched by outside influence.

Harmony between people and nature
If you are looking for a place, where you can spend several days in harmony with nature - Silveira is a place for you. If you are looking for a place to dream in silence - Silveira is a place for you. If you are looking for a place to have a touch to traditional rustic Portuguese life - Silveira is a place for you. These 5 days that we spent in Silveira were so quiet and so wonderful. We traveled with children - 3 years old boy and his little sister. And it was great that our son didn't have to bore at home - he could spend hours at the open air, and we didn't have to worry about him - because surroundings are very safe, there are no cars and locals are very friendly. Somebody left a record about Lynn and John in the guestbook: "couldn't be more helpful' - and it is true, and we can't say better. If we add, that house is cozy and comfortable and has traditional Portuguese spirit and lovely garden is full of flowers, it becomes clear that Silveira is ideal place for vacation, at least for us :)

A Rare Treasure
Sunflower Cottage is in an Idyllic spot. We return again and again. The hosts are wonderfully friendly and helpful and are on hand if you need them. After several visits we consider Lynn and John as friends. The cottage is set in a charming little village with friendly locals who still live a rural life that stretches back generations. The nearest place to shop is only a couple of miles away where you can buy most things and chat to the lovely shop/cafe owner who provided us with honey and delicious olive oil to take home. The area is unspoilt and very beautiful, and you do feel you have found a rare treasure. Wild life is abundant and you can roam at leisure in the surrounding countryside. The cottage is well equiped and delightfully decorated/furnished in the tradition Porugese style with lovely little artisan touches that make all the difference. We have visited Portugal 5 times now and never missed staying here. The delightful little couryard garden is magical. You will not be disappointed!

About the neighbourhood
The area offers an abundance of exciting adventures to suit a whole variety of pursuits and pastimes. There are many nearby river beaches for those who like to swim or sunbathe. Nearby lakes and rivers offer an abundance of carp, barbell and black bass for fishing or hiking/skiing in the Parque Natural de Serra da Estrela. Step outside the door of Sunflower Cottage and begin your own unique quest to explore the many trails in the area, seeking to identify the richness of wildlife, flora and open spaces in total tranquility. Just a ten-minute walk down to the banks of the river Tejo you can watch river eagles, snipe, goshawk, black stork, woodpeckers, hawks and griffin vulture’s circle above or luxuriate back home in pure relaxation with a good book and a glass of vinho. Imagine walking for miles without seeing a soul, being at one with nature with just the sound of your own breath. Memories of childhood when life was less demanding abound and yet the ease of dipping into Lisbon City life on occasion reminds us why this is home. The properties are located just a mile and half from the main A23 highway which provides easy access to many local beauty spots and attractions, including the Portas de Rodao, just 10 min drive away where 116 species of birds can be observed from the viewing platform that overhangs the river Tejo. Alternatively, a leisurely boat trip on the Tejo allows a totally different perspective to experience one of Portugal's 7 natural wonders.
