The beaches are also a few hundred meters away. The medieval quarter of Ventimiglia is the second largest in the Liguria region after Genoa. This part has beautiful churches and narrow winding streets where people actually live and is not ruined by modern cafe's bars and tourist shops, Ventimiglia has a friday market with 500 stalls and one the most beautiful seaside gardens (Villa Hanbury built by the British) in northern Italy. Queen Victoria was among the illustrious guests of Villa Hanbury in 1882. During the summer there are several festivals dedicated to the medieval past or to the local food. Ventimiglia is just a few kilometers away from the French border and the many attractions of the Cote d'Azur. Montecarlo is half an hour away. Besides the beaches in Ventimiglia there are plenty of seaside resorts on the Italian and French side a short distance away. The Val Roja and the Val Nervia with unspoiled landscapes and the pictoresque villages of Airole, Dolceaqua, Apricale, Pigna etc.etc. are 10-20 minutes driving away. The high val Nervia is part of the Regional Natural Park of the Ligurian Alps and although so close to the sea, offers one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Alps. Excellent
This very spacious apartment on two floors has wonderful views from the two balconies. Ventimiglia Alta is a very quiet area with a lot of character. Local shops include a baker, butcher, takeaway, small supermarket and an ice cream parlour. There are great restaurants nearby with views of the sea. I would definitely recommend this mediaeval house.

Atmospheric location and spacious apartment
Enjoyed our stay and an excellent landlord in Alessandro. Very helpful. We went in August and it was hot but the apartment stayed cool. Great location in the centre of the old town. Coincided with the medieval festival. Beaches are 15 mins walk away. Local shops in old town have everything you need. New Town turns out to be not that new. Huge markets. Menton and Nice are close by. Thank you Alessandro I can recommend your flat without hesitation.

Excellent apartment in stunning location
The apartment is clean, tidy, well furnished, and has 2 balconies overlooking part of the old town, and across the river to the mountains sitting behind the new town. There's a washing machine (so useful to have a constant supply of clean clothing as it is so hot!), all the expected kitchen appliances, and a portable fan - although a goregous breeze can be created throughout by half opening the shutters. Alessandro was an excellent landlord - he gave us plenty of local information and restaurant reccomendations, and even looked into Scooter hire for us. He was always available by phone if needed, and the apartment cleaner lived next door so we had the comfort of knowing someone would be there if needed in a hurry. It sits about 3/4 up the hill of the old town - so do expect a calf workout! - but the views and the experience of living within such a gorgeous Italian community is worth it. As far as we could make out, we were the only tourists residing within the old town, and so our positive holiday experience was greatly increased. The neighbours are so friendly and welcoming, in particular Angela who even cooked us spagetti on our first day! The old town is great for exploring (there's a beautiful church and at the top sits U Funtanin and Porta Nizza, two excellent restaurants overlooking the bay which become a nightly hub for locals and Italian/French tourists). The apartment is a ten minute walk to the train station, and from there you can get all over Italy and France, as we did most days. The seafront is a busy collection of bars and restaurants at night, and during the day, the beaches are relatively quiet, extremely clean, and have sunbed/parasol hire available.

About the neighbourhood
The area is the most western part of Liguria, bordering with France. The mild climate was well known to the British already in the eighteenth century. The property is in the Città Alta of Ventimiglia, the second largest medieval quarter in Liguria along with Albenga, after Genoa. A walk bridge above the Roja river divides the modern part of Ventimiglia from the old town. The Città Alta has a cathedral from the 12th century and wonderful views. Other historical buildings worth of notice are the Parliament Loggia (or Merchants loggia) dated 14th – 15th century with a double Gothic arch and Palazzo Vescovile with the 14th century wooden panel painting 'Madonna with Child and Angels' by Barnaba da Modena. The Aprosiana Library, founded in 1649, was the first public library of Liguria and preserves historically interesting and valuable manuscripts.A couple of hundred meters away from the old city there are the pebble beaches mostly free of charge and plenty of beachfront bars and restaurants.Besides the Friday market with 500 stalls, there is another market in Ventimiglia that is a special place for anyone who loves good food. It is the covered market, open 7 days a week, a couple of hundred meters from the beachfront, which has the finest and freshest produce, fruit, vegetables, cheeses, pasta, meat, fresh seafood and flowers that the region has to offer. Five kilometers from Ventimiglia there is Bordighera with its long seafront promenade, mostly traffic-free. There is a small old town area (Bordighera Alta) above the small harbour. A further 10 kilometers away there is San Remo, a pleasant and busy little place, great for shopping, with a couple of harbours, a cathedral and old town area (the Pigna), and other attractions such as the Villa Nobel and pleasant garden areas. The Nervia and the Roja valley, 10-20 miunutes drive from Ventimiglia, can offer beautiful sceneries, picturesque medieval villages and genuine Ligurian food at reasonable prices. The first city after the border on the French side is Menton just 23 kilometers from Ventimiglia and Montecarlo is a short distance away.

How to get there
Exit the A10/E80 motorway at the Ventimiglia exit and follow the directions Ventimiglia for almost 2 km. At the round-about you turn right and cross the bridge over the Roya. At the end of the bridge turn left and shortly after right. In the square you have to go up instead of going through the tunnel. Around 400 meters along this road you can take the access ramp (Salita Colla) on your right or continue by car for a few hundred meters and turn right in front of the ancient Forte dell'Annunziata. There are also direct trains to Ventimiglia from Milan, Genoa, Turin, Rome, Nice and Marseilles. The house is a 15 minutes walk from the station. There are buses from via Cavour 200 meters from the station to Ventimiglia Alta.
