Entirely owner managed, maintained and loved, Sansome House Cottage lies in the courtyard of Sansome House, a very attractive peaceful setting on the edge of Ilmington, one of the prettiest villages in the Cotswolds. Converted from 18th Century farm buildings, refurbished and modernised, it offers a home away from home. Ideal for a romantic break, a family holiday, couples, walkers (fabulous walks!) or just for those wanting to relax together in comfortable & roomy surroundings. Unsuitable for pets and under 5's.

This centrally heated cottage with open log fire has a cosy & comfortable...

Interaction with guests
On arrival we greet you with a tea tray to welcome you. I can do a small amount of shopping if you are travelling from afar. A bottle of wine and candles are left for your dinner and a small box of logs should you want to curl up on the sofa with a book in front of a log fire. We live in the big house the other side of the courtyard (separated by a lawn and tree) and are available for help and advice (not intrusion!) most of the time. We show you around and then disappear unless we are needed. Our aim is provide a place which is as if you are house guests at a little country house and everything has been left ready for you, including freshly picked flowers, but the owners have crept away.

My wife and I spent a wonderful month at Sansome Cottage. The cottage is roomy, cozy and comfortable. The kitchen/dining room is well equipped for cooking. There is a lovely private garden. In cool weather, the wood-burning fireplace is cozy. Ilmington is a typical, lovely,...More

Delighted you enjoyed your stay and found the kitchen well equipped. We can nearly always lend something found missing (e.g. the fish kettle which is stored with us). I am currently updating some guides for my files which suggest circular day trips out by car,...More

Additional Rate and Availability Information
Note that most of the year it is Saturday changeovers only and weeks are let as full weeks only, But I may be able to be flexible, depending on time of year and availability. Quotes on here are not always correct (they will estimate odd stays like 12 days in the summer which are lower than the actual rate as I normally only do 7,14, etc. so please check with me! This will not show up in the quote on here so please contact me for accurate pricing. I can take credit cards on another site but don't here.

If you are coming for a long stay I may be able to arrange for a cleaner to come in for a few hours each week. She currently charges £25 for two hours (minimum 2 hour session). It would be necessary to arrange this in advance of your stay.

About the neighbourhood
Ilmington has an excellent village shop open 6 days a week + Sunday morning and with a cafe attached.

There are dozens of beautiful villages around; most of the houses and cottages are built from locally quarried Cotswold stone which glows golden in the sunshine.

Nearby: The delightful Hidcote Manor garden, 3 miles. A National Trust garden and, arguably, the best one in England. Designed by Lawrence Johnston, an American in the early 1900's, it features a series of 'rooms' as well as wild areas and woodland. Opposite this, the delightful privately owned, Kiftsgate Garden. You can walk to Hidcote from the cottage through the fields or take it in on a 7 mile circular walk to include the excellent Ebrington Arms pub in Ebrington.

The old wool market town of Chipping Ca...

Getting around
Although a car is not essential ( with a shop and two dining pubs + online supermarket delivery availability) we do recommend that you have one, in order to really get the most out of your holiday as there are so many wonderful, sometimes out of the way, places to explore. Local transport is sketchy. There are trains to London from both Stratford and Moreton in Marsh. I have devised some suggested day trips which I have left in the folder - mostly encompassing an historic house or garden of which there are many in the area. Ordinary bikes as well as electric bikes are available locally for hire. The pedal cycles can be delivered to the cottage.

How to get there
Airport: LHR (and BHX is only 37 miles): 124.0 km
Railway: MoretoninMarsh&Stratford: 13.0 km
Being in the centre of England we are not too far from a number of airports, London Heathrow (an hour and half by car) is probably best for trans-Atlantic travellers, but Birmingham is the nearest (45 minutes drive). But Bristol, East Midlands and London Luton are also within easy reach. A little further is London Gatwick (takes about 2 and half hours) and London Stanstead (about the same).

Many of our visitors take the train from London to Oxford and pick up a hire car there, thereby avoiding driving in London, but an equal number pick up a car at whichever airport they land at. Local car hire can be arranged but it usually involves a taxi journey from the station. You can also get a train from London to Banbury (20 mins from the cottage) or a direct coach service from Heathrow, and...
