About the neighbourhood
Furbo is the gateway to Connemara, a district in W Ireland facing the Atlantic coast. It is known as a ‘Gaeltacht area’ ( Irish speaking) To the north is Killary Harbour, south Galway Bay , east Lough Corrib, and west the Atlantic Ocean. It is known for its rugged beauty, and incredible scenery. As you near the coast you’ll find a stunning unpolluted coastline of sandy beaches, blue waters and fishing villages like Roundstone. A coastal route called the ‘Wild Atlantic Way’ is clearly signposted for you to explore the area. Connemara National Park is a vast expanse of mountains, bogs, heathland and lakes and is home to the Connemara pony. Horse riding, walking, cycling, hiking, coasteering are just a few activities on offer
Getting around
A car is the best way of getting around so that you can stop and explore at your leisure but there are many organised coach tours which will take you to some of the best attractions, such as the Burren and Cliffs of Moher, Kylemore Abbey and walled gardens, Clifden, The Sky Road, Westport, Letterfrack, Leenaun and Renvyle Peninsula. The Aran Islands lie just off Galway Bay. Take a day trip by ferry or air to the last outpost of traditional Irish culture. Ferries operate to the islands from Doolin in Co Clare and Rossaveal in Co Galway. Flights leave from Inverin local airport just 10 minutes drive from the cottage in Furbo
