Holiday Rental House
Updown Cottage is a C16th self catering holiday cottage, assessed as 5* with Gold Award from Visit Britain for all 11 years. The cottage is for currently for sale as we are moving closer to family but we are continuing to take bookings and look forward to hearing from everyone and anyone who may wish to stay or in fact own their own slice of history. We've loved every inch of the cottage and town and would love to pass it on to a like-minded person! The cottage stands on Gold 'Hovis' Hill which is famous from Ridley Scott's 1970s Hovis Bread advert featuring the 'Boy on a Bicycle'. The views are spectacular from both cottage and hillside garden and are certainly some of the most photographed in England. Every luxury that you would expect from a 5* hotel is provided, but the whole cottage ...Updown Cottage is a C16th self catering holiday cottage, assessed as 5* with Gold Award from Visit Britain for all 11 years. The views are spectacular from both cottage and hillside garden and are certainly some of the most photographed in England. Every luxury that you would expect from a 5* hotel is provided, but the whole cottage is yours for the duration of your stay with complimentary Wifi, free national landline calls, a baby grand piano, log fire & basket of logs, huge film library, welcome breakfast and tea basket, 36 Nespresso capsules, all natural toiletries and piles of towels and bathrobes. Sumptuous soft furnishings blend with the ancient beams but the 3 bathrooms are furnished with the latest fittings. The emphasis is on relaxed elegance with both comfort and convenience, the main priorities. Luxury spa treatments may be taken within the cottage by pre-booking through My Personal Sanctuary - the ultimate relaxing treat. Shaftesbury is perfectly placed for exploring the west country with Stonehenge, Salisbury, the Cotswolds, Jurassic coast, & Bath less than an hours drive. Heathrow is about 2 hours by car and the cottage is accessible by train or coach from London. The station is 4 miles away and well served by taxis but coaches stop only 1 minute's walk from the cottage. Boutique shops, delis and fabulous restaurants are less than a minute away at the top of the hill in this lovely old small town. Also very convenient for anyone settling children at local schools such as Bryanston, Port Regis, Shaftesbury, St Mary's, etc.More

Thank you so much for leaving this review & we’re delighted you had a good time. Apologies that the garden had ‘thrived’...... our gardener is such a lovely older gentleman who knows absolutely everything there is to know about the area. I’ll give a small...More

About the neighbourhood
A beautiful old town situated 700 feet up in Thomas Hardy's 'Vale of little Daires'. Shaftesbury dates from the time before Alfred the Great and flourished when he established the Abbey. The massive walls opposite Updown Cottage date from the days of the Abbey and have seen centuries of pilgrims and latter day tourists pass over Gold Hill's cobbles. The spectacular views from the cottage stretch over miles of glorious English countryside and change with the weather and seasons, offering a constantly fascinating outlook. Shaftesbury is ideally situated for exploring the whole of the beautiful west country of England with its castles, coasts, cathedrals & stunning countryside.
Getting around
A car gives the greatest flexibility but it is possible to arrive by train or coach and take taxis or hire cars to see the sights. It is also possible to enjoy Shaftesbury on foot as all shops, cafes, museums, pubs and restaurants are within a minute's walk.
