About the neighbourhood
Hynish is the place that Alan Stevenson chose in 1838 as the base for the building of the Skerryvore lighthouse and later as the shore station for the lighthouse keepers and their families. How to get there
By sea: from Oban (3 to 4 hours), ferry service to Scarinish (7.5 miles from Hynish) operated by Caledonian MacBrayne By air: from Glasgow Airport (35 to 45 minutes) operated by Flybe; from Oban Airport (40 minutes) operated by Hebridean Air Services. Tiree Airport is located at Crossapol (5 miles from Hynish). Roads on Tiree, in common with many other small islands, are nearly all single-track roads. There are passing places, locally called pockets where cars must wait to enable oncoming traffic to pass or overtake.
