One of those gems where you want to visit again and again!!
Every so often you stumble across a little gem of a homestay in the most out of the way places. Mai Chau La Vida is one of those places. We spent 5 hours on a scooter riding from Hanoi to Mai Chau and to pull up to this Homestay was wonderful. The Owner/host Lan met us on arrival, provided ice cold drinks and cold face towels, and then set about registering us. Considering Lan manages the establishment by herself with a little help during the day she is a remarkable women. The views from the restaurant/bar are amazing and a wonderful way to end a very long day. There is no restaurant per se and no menus to order from but the Vietnamese food that Lan cooked and served herself was fabulous!! Everything was very fresh and the flavours were marvellous!! We finished our first night having drinks around the bar. There is limited choice of what you can drink but as we were all happy with cold beer and the simple cocktails Lan allowed us to make with what she had on offer. The evening was a huge success!! Breakfast is very simple and again Lan cooks everything to order. I had Pho but I had the option of how my eggs were cooked and the bread rolls were obviously fresh that day. If you can get up early to watch the sunrise over the mountains surrounding Mai Chau it is just gorgeous!! The rooms are simple but good size and they all have a balcony allowing you to sit outside and look over the rice fields and up to the mountains. My only complaint about our room was the mattress. I have travelled alot in Vietnam and have become used to the hardness of the beds but for some in our group they were a little firm. Apart from that the room is great. No TV which is wonderful!! Language can be a slight problem but we found Google Translate enough to let Lan(She has limited English) know what we required. She couldn't have been more helpful ensuring our stay was a memorable one. Be aware that Lan does not have ATM facilities(Some websites indicate that she does) to use to make payment so make sure you have enough cash to pay for your stay. There is an ATM in Mai Chau Township(about 5 minutes away by scooter) which we made use of. This is a gem of a place and I would highly recommend you stop through and say hello to Lan.
