Get the train from Waterloo to Ashurst New Forest and walk the 50 yards to the house. If you don't want to cook the pub is 30 yards away, and a bistro and another pub are at a short walk.Whether you are enjoying cycling, walking, golfing, tennis or other activities. or simply chilling out, Rufus Cottage is a comfortable place to stay for a relaxing week or more. The property has two bedrooms (one double, one twin), two bathrooms and a day bed for a 5th guest if necessary. We are on the open topped bus route, so our guests can travel around the forest getting on and off as they wish; returning to the cottage without taking the car out. The cottage is more than 100 years old and the staircase has a 90 degree turn which requires care navigating. This is our third year of holiday rental and the reviews and feedback we have had from our guests have been very positive. Only 89 minutes from Waterloo on the fast train. Please note that we generally can't do Saturday changeovers.More

Interaction with guests
I live less than a mile from Rufus cottage so I am generally available if you would like any information or have a problem. However I don't see most of our guests. The key is left in a key safe so you can arrive at any time. If you are travelling with infants there is a travel cot and high chair in the cottage. Please let me know if you want the cot put up.

We stayed at Rufus Cottage between the 17th and 24th September, and couldn’t have asked for more. The cottage was far bigger than expected, and had everything you could need for a great week in the New Forest. The location is ideal for exploring, with the station just around the corner for trips into Southampton and Winchester, and with three great pubs all serving lovely food within walking distance you will be spoilt for choice! We will definitely be back next year, and would highly recommend Rufus Cottage to anyone thinking about a trip to the New Forest.

We have just returned from a long weekend at Rufus Cottage. The cottage was perfect for what we needed; very clean, well equipped and perfect location. David recommended a walk to a pub in Beaulieu and it was stunning (ensure your start off walking through Ashurst camping site to avoid the road). We would definitely return.

That sums it up! Perfect location! Convenient for the pub and public transport. The pub is adjacent to the cottage, the railway is behind the cottage (but don’t worry - you’ll hardly notice it) & the bus stop is just round the corner from the pub (the no 6 goes to Lyndhurst, Brockenhurst & Lymington or you can catch the red route of the New Forest tour. Enough about transport! The cottage is very spacious and modern. You will find everything you need for a relaxing stay. It is kept in very good condition and you will soon feel at home. I highly recommend it.

Great location, near coop, chip shop,Chinese and indian takeaways. Everthing we needed in the cottage. Downstairs enough room for 4. We had our meals in the conservatory which was nice and warm even in the winter. We thought the cottage was opposite the new forest inn, across the road. In fact it is on the inn car park, separated by a wooden fence. That said we did not have any disturbance from any visitors to the inn. Twin bedroom upstairs is a little small and there is nowhere to hang any clothes. Beds are comfortable. The bathroom with bath has a handshower but you cant shower standing.

A good location for exploring the New Forest. There is plenty of room and David, the owner has clearly thought through the facilities required when letting a property, particularly the well equipped kitchen and conservatory. It was cold outside during our stay and the cottage was really warm. A Fullers pub and access to a railway station are near at hand.

Excellent location for accessing the New Forest, Winchester, Southampton and all surrounding areas. We needed a base for a pre-xmas visit to see family and friends, and Rufus Cottage was perfect. Lots of rooms downstairs meant space to spread out but the living room is cozy (we appreciated the blankets provided as it was very cold when we visited!). The bedrooms were a good size and it was perfect having 2 bathrooms. Good quality bedding, plenty of hot water and the kitchen was also well equipped. Less than 1 minute walk to The New Forest pub opposite where we had a very nice meal (as well as eating out in Lyndhurst where there were several options). There is a co-op just a few minutes drive away to stock up on essentials. We will definitely return!

Functional two bed room house with on site car parking, next to station and country pub. The decor and facilities were functional and served our purpose as we were out all day. The lounge area was quite spartan and bit gloomy

Oh dear, this is the worst review I have had on any site since starting renting the cottage 4 years ago. I do have the regular re-decorating planned for next month and I will double check the bulbs as the lounge is actually very bright with all the lights on. It is next to the conservatory which is also bright and airy. Most other guests have really enjoyed having so much bright space downstairs. I will see what I can do on the spartan front; the lounge already has an original oil painting on the wall, a small wooden sculpture and coffee table whilst most of the games and books are kept in the study. So, Sharron, I am so sorry that we have not met your expectations and I will do my best to brighten up the lounge.

About the neighbourhood
I live less than a mile from Rufus Cottage and regularly walk with our dog in the forest across the road. I am also a keen (but definitely amateur) cyclist. There are quite a few rope swings dotted around the area. These are all put up by people for fun and have no safety checks and could be cut down or fall down at any time, but they are great fun if you have kids (also without kids). One fantastic walk or cycle ride from the cottage is to Beaulieu Road station. This is the site of the Drift Inn, and the pony market (pony sales 4 times per year). The route is beautiful and you can get a drink and meal at the Drift before coming back. If you don't fancy the walk you can get the train there or back. There are many cycle routes and there are maps for some of these in the cottage. If you are l...
Getting around
Rufus cottage is an old railway cottage at Ashurst New Forest station, so travel by train is easy. Local stations such as Beaulieu Road, Brockenhurst (to Lymington), Christchurch, Bournemouth etc. are really easy. As is access to London, or Winchester. There is also a bus stop on the main road. This is on the Blue Star route 6 which calls at Southampton, Lyndhurst, Brockenhurst and Lymington. In the summertime the open top bus stops here. Ferries at Southampton and Lymington serve the Isle of Wight. But best is a bicycle. If you don't have your own rent one from Lyndhurst. They will deliver to the cottage. For walkers you have forest access 100 yards from the cottage..
