Benfield is one of the Morebattle's oldest cottages but offers a warm welcome, central heating, big bathroom and everything we want for modern life - above all, Benfield is cosy and comfortable. Two doors away is the village shop which sells everything and four doors finds one of Britain's best butchers shops. 150 metres gets you to the village inn with good food, and drink. Morebattle was founded by visitors from Wales, many hundreds of years ago. To this day, the most common name in this lovely village is Welsh! A stay at Benfield will get you to Kelso as well - about seven miles away, a wonderful, historic, market town with a race course. Going south from Morebattle brings you into the Cheviots, one of Britain's most remote areas where the ancient Romans lived. A stay at Benfield will get you to Kelso as well - about seven miles away, a wonderful, historic, market town with a race course. Going south from Morebattle brings you into the Cheviots, one of Britain's most remote areas where the ancient Romans lived. Not far from Morebattle are tower houses, built by rich Scots in the middle ages - visit Smailholm (4 miles) where a major battle was fought, visit Eckford, (only 2 miles) where the castle had a moat as well. If you like to fish, there are numerous tributaries of the Tweed close by and the Tweed itself. Using the footpaths is great fun and great exercise - the long-distance 'St. Cuthbert's Way' passes the front door and, will show some of the area's wonderful scenery as well as some of the important religious sites. Then there is the Abbeys Way which also exists as a different route for cyclists. The Abbeys Way passes the door too (Cyclists can keep their bikes in the cottage).and takes you to Jedburgh, Dryburgh, Melrose, and Kelso. These abbeys were built by Cistercian monks in an area where they kept sheep for wool. Then, of course, a trip can be taken to Edinburgh, or to the amazing coast near Coldingham. Whatever your choice of activity (there's a great cyclo-cross course nearby as well as golf and many other things), you will find it at Benfield.More
