Holiday Rental House
This is a charming 150 year old 3-bedroomed gite in a quiet street in the centre of the ville. It has a lovely courtyard garden with a sun terrace, where you can look over the rolling hillside. There is wifi, satellite TV, and free landline calls worldwide. There is a good sized salon with comfy seating for 7 people. There is one bedroom on the first floor, next to the bathroom and there are two bedrooms on the second floor, but the stairs could be a bit tricky for small children and elderly people. There is a toilet and separate shower room downstairs. Vermenton has everything you need - butchers and bakers, bars and restaurants. There is a toilet and separate shower room downstairs. Vermenton has everything you need - butchers and bakers, bars and restaurants. The supermarket is especially good - it sells local wines and has an extensive butchers section using locally-reared animals - and it's within easy walking distance. Local activities include horse riding, kayaking/canoeing, coarse fishing, cycling, hiking / walking, rock climbing and swimming. Burgundy is famous for its wines - there are plenty of opportunities for wine tasting within 20km - Chablis, Cote d'Auxerre, Irancy, Caves de Bailly. The countryside is beautiful with the vineyards and there are lovely medieval towns worth visiting such as Auxerre, Avallon and Vezelay. The Parc du Morvan Nature Reserve is within 30km. The River Cure runs through the village. There is a designated swimming area with a little sandy beach -  ideal for all ages as the riverbed has a gentle incline. There is a grassy play area with playground equipment behind and paddleboats in the summer. The house is very close to a category 2 river, and lots of locals are anglers with the AAPPMA. Fishing is in the River Cure and the Canal de Nivernais between Cravant and Arcy-sur-Cure, running through Vermenton, within walking distance in the beautiful setting of the Parc des Isles - pike, perch, eel, carp, roach, brown and rainbow trout and zander. Permits cost 10 euros per person per day or 30 euros for a week, child (under 12) prices are 3 euros per day or 18 euros per week. You need to apply the day before, with two passport sized photographs and the permits are available from the Maison de la Presse on the main road. A little way along the river bank is the Port, where you can take a stroll and look at the boats. The Parc des Iles by the river Cure is a lovely park - good for a picnic or fishing. The beautiful Cistercian Abbey of Reigny is set alongside the river Cure and forested hillside - concerts and weddings are held there.  The village owes its prosperity in former times from vineyards and timber-floating along the River Cure. On Friday mornings there is a lively vegetable, meat and dairy produce market.More

I'm so pleased that you all enjoyed your holiday and had plenty to do. Fleur de Lys is indeed quirky, but people love this about it, especially the sun terrace. You will all be most welcome when you come back.

After reading such excellent reviews about this property, we were really looking forward to enjoying our stay. We were met at the house by John, the owner's representative. He spent all of 5mins handing over the keys, telling us that the oven was "terrible" and...More

We have just spent two superb weeks in Fleur de Lys. We found the property to be so much more spacious than we had anticipated. Our four children, three of whom are teenagers, had the top floor to themselves which we all really appreciated! The...More

About the neighbourhood
Vermenton is a small but lively ville that is located in the heart of Burgundy's famous winelands, in the Yonne department. Its name means 'country of the beautiful hills', and it doesn't take a visitor to the town long to discover why this name was given. The countryside is peaceful and indeed, very beautiful, and provides a perfect backdrop to this pretty little town. Vermenton owes much of its appeal to its situation beside the lovely Canal Nivernais. There is a canal port in Vermenton, and this can be a lively and colourful spot in summer time when the tourist boats moor up and holiday makers come ashore to do their shopping and to dine in the excellent little restaurants that can be found in the town. The town has plenty of buildings of historical interest, with the old church, the...
How to get there
Driving: from Calais follow the motorways via Reims and Troyes to Auxerre as the best route. It's 300 miles and takes 5 hours. There are several ferry companies with routes between the south of England and the north of France. Flying: Paris - Charles de Gaulle, Orly or Beauvais Tille - prices vary but Easyjet fly to Paris from London. By train: Eurostar go to Paris from London. There's a train every two hours direct to Vermenton from Bercy, Paris, which takes 2 hours.
