Interaction with guestsWhenever possible I personally welcome all guests. I like to explain to them what they can expect from the cottage and from me. If they prefer a hands-off approach I can simply hand them the keys and give all the information they are likely to need. However I do find many guests wish to make use of my being close by when if required I can be available to suggest things to do, or provide detailed information on the cottage and the locality.

Delightful, peaceful and spacious
This is a great place for two people to stay in very beautiful and quiet countryside. It is very secluded, away from the road up a private track and hidden to one side of the owner's house. It is extremely well-equipped and spacious, which is unusual for a two-person self-catering holiday cottage. We loved the large bath and spacious shower (and there is also a separate cloakroom with toilet and basin). There are lots of maps, books of walks and other local information and many quirky features to enjoy. We found vases of flowers and food and drink to welcome us and Roger was keen to help and to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable. Thoroughly recommended.

Wonderful holiday cottage
A fantastic cottage, just perfect for two people to escape to a beautiful area of the country. Everything in the cottage has been so well thought out. It is beautifully decorated, spotlessly clean, there was a very generous welcome pack, the views are wonderful and the bed is incredibly comfy. We stayed in the winter and it was warm and cosy with a fully stocked log burner. We will definitely return.

Description and Reality are Two Very Different Things
Going by the description, this place has got a lot to live up to. The website states ‘Heaven for two’, ‘Breathtaking views’, ‘Five-star gold luxury and style’, ‘20-acre wilderness woodland walk’. It actually sounds quite idyllic and that’s the reason we booked it for a week in August 2022, but the reality is a bit different! The website also states that it has been awarded 5 Star+ Gold for the 21st year in a row, but that was up to 2017 and now we are in 2023. I wonder why it hasn't been rated in the past six years? The living/dining room goes from the front to the back of the property, at the back is a small window with a large bush in front of the window with a low-level wall behind that so no view there. Then there are the patio doors that open up onto to a steep stone staircase with a seating area at the top with a round table and two old rickety worn-out wooden chairs. The stairway leading up was overgrown with tall foliage and was very unkempt. While sitting at the table at the top of the stairs there was nothing to see, there may have been a slight view but certainly not ‘breathtaking’. The 20 acres of woodland walk is on a steep incline and parts of the path are unpassable due to overgrowth and brambles and quite unpleasant to walk there. At the front of the property and just in front of the window is view of a log storage section and to the right a corrugated roofed lean-to, so no view there either. The bedroom window was high up on the wall so it was not possible to look out of it and the kitchen window overlooked the side of the owner’s property just across the yard so no actual views from anywhere inside the property. What we found interesting was that on the website it is claimed that the owner ‘responds promptly to complaints or criticism’ but when looking on other review websites regarding this property quite a few people have commented on the very uncomfortable settee which is in the living room, on older photos you can see that this settee was once upholstered but it looks like at some stage it has been worn out and the upholstery removed and lots of cushions put on it instead (it is extremely uncomfortable). I think that if I was in this situation and received multiple complaints about a piece of furniture then I would have it replaced immediately. Something that we found very unusual was that there was no visitors book (every holiday cottage we have been to has had a visitors book) so alarm bells were starting to ring, and this has got nothing to do with covid as there was a plentiful supply of magazines and brochures. We also found it unusual that the other sites that this property is reviewed on including this one has a very small number of reviews in comparison to the hundreds of bookings it’s had over the years? And finally… there is a very long drive leading up to the property, when entering you have to drive through a narrow entrance and over a cattle grid. On the morning that we were leaving there was a car parked on the grid and blocking our exit, I pulled over to let the car get past but it did not move, we sat there for about 5 minutes, I could not see into the car as the sky was reflecting off the cars windscreen. I thought that maybe the driver was not in the car and had gone into the adjacent field for whatever reason so I sounded my horn, still nothing. We sat there for a further 10 minutes and then the car suddenly started moving out of the way with the driver smiling and waving as he drove by, he had been sitting in it all along! We were under the impression rightly or wrongly that we had been purposely blocked in until the owner could check the property to see what state it had been left in before giving the driver the all clear to allow us to leave. When we got home I emailed the owner and explained what had happened, he apologized and told me that the man in the car was his handyman coming to do a job but had just come out of hospital after a very serious operation and had probably fallen asleep behind the wheel! Really!! So, to sum up, not ‘Heaven for 2’, no ‘Breathtaking Views’ from anywhere inside the property, not very comfortable, not ‘5 Star Gold Luxury’. May have been good in the day many years ago but now well past its sell by date in my opinion and if you’re thinking of going for a pint in the village of Clun don’t bother is too far away to walk with no pavements on the road. You could take a shortcut across the fields but not recommended at night (good chance of getting lost on the way back!) Stayed there last August and if you’re wondering why it has taken so long to leave a review its because of being pestered by the other review sites that this cottage may be affiliated with (not Trip Advisor) to leave a review, so here it is. It cost £750 to stay here for a week, the place is aptly named!

Fabulous Find
Dick Turpin Cottage is a wonderful place to stay - Roger was the perfect host and provided us with many goodies and some great advice. The house itself is spacious with everything you need for a relaxing time. We loved the decor, artwork and collages in particular - lots of character. It is impeccably clean, has perfect views and is very near to many things. You are surrounded by rolling hills, neighbouring sheep, bats at night, and tranquility. I was staying there with my 8 year old niece. We would certainly stay again there - no question! Our itinerary, which may be useful, as some of these places take a bit of planning ahead. We went to: Black Country Museum (on our way there) Darkly Dales Stables for a pony day The Great Escape at Great Hagley Estate (challenge courses and zip wires) Westonbury Mill Water Gardens Croft Castle Bewilderwood Cheshire Shrewsbury Castle (to see Treasure Island) Goodheart Animal Sanctuary for a private tour and to learn all about the animals there Hoo Zoo for a visit and a Carnivore Combo experience Quick 15 min free visits were: Hopton Castle and Clun Castle

All you could wish for.
A magical 21st stay in this stunningly beautiful area of South Shropshire. The cottage affords tranquility, comfort and relaxation in equal quantities. The hosts have considered every need of their guests and no effort has been spared to fulfil this. A food pack and wine welcomes guests on arrival along with beautiful fresh floral arrangements. An enormous bath, spacious shower cubicle and luxurious towels ensure a relaxing end to the day, whilst the huge bed guarantees a blissful night's sleep.Visit the many delightful villages nearby or simply remain at the cottage, enjoy the views and watch sheep grazing peacefully whilst a red kite or buzzard floats high overhead and bats dart past the windows at dusk.Heaven on earth.!

Perfect in Every Way
We had a very comfortable and delightful stay at the cottage. The cottage is spacious and well equipped and set in spacious grounds adjacent to Cockford Hall. The peace and tranquility of the setting suited us down to the ground. Roger and Burkhard were marvelous hosts and nothing was too much trouble. On our arrival we were greeted with vases of flowers and a selection of 'goodies' which provided us with more than the basics before our Sainsburys delivery arrived. The best compliment we can give is an answer to the question 'Would you make a return stay at the cottage' to which the answer would be an unqualified 'Yes. Definitely!'

Perfect weekend stay
We stayed at Dick Turpin Cottage for a long weekend in February to celebrate my wife's birthday. It took a little bit of finding but once we were there it was absolutely wonderful! Our host was most accommodating and he'd obviously gone to great lengths to make the cottage perfect in every detail. We didn't want to come home at the end of the weekend! The setting is beautiful, up at the end of a valley with fantastic views of the Shropshire hills. Clun is just around the corner and has everything you need in a little village. We had some great walks and loved the scenery but we're pleased to Dick Turpin Cottage was the best thing about our stay in Shropshire, full of interesting little finishes and details as well as handy literature about the surrounding area, plus a good selection of DVDs and music. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

Charming and unique
A wonderful week in a charming and unique cottage in the beautiful Clun valley. Roger, our host, was most welcoming and concerned that everything was in order for our relaxation and contentment. His personal touch in the decor and furnishings reflects his life’s interests and work. The cottage is in an excellent situation for exploring the Shropshire hills and Offas Dyke. It’s also a great place to snuggle down around the lit wood burner when the weather is inclement. All in all, a great place and a memorable stay.

Fantastic!
My wife and I stayed at the Dick Turpin for 5 nights over New Year 2018/19. We both adored the cottage and found it to be comfortable, peaceful, cosy and well equipped. Facilities in the cottage are great with comfy beds, sofas and a well appointed kitchen for cooking after a long days walking in beautiful Shropshire. Lots of lovely touches like a log burner, stylish art and lots of guides about the local area. Roger was a great host, we always felt he was available for help but gave us plenty of space to enjoy the place. We would both recommend to couples who are looking to get away from it all and recharge the batteries. All in all, awesome! Thank you Roger.
