Rakalj is a small town on the west coast of the Rasa Bay on the southeast coast of Istria, 24 km from Pula.<BR> First mentioned 1190g. was once known for its traditional Istrian pottery, and for sailors, fishermen and stonemasons.<BR> Visitors is attractive due to its cultural and historical sites (the parish church of the baroque building from the 18th century., Castle ruins Rakalj) and ethnographic collections arranged in the native home of scientists and writers Mijo Mirkovic (Mate Balota).<BR> Old Rakalj located closer to the sea, on a hill along the coast of the Rasa Bay, and to the ruins of the old Rakalj stands the Church. Sweet, modern, comfortable, clean!
We stayed for about 3 weeks in April and loved it! The house has been fully renovated/rebuilt very recently and everything is like new and so tastefully done. It's been designed and decorated very well and includes everything you need to have a great long or short stay. The fireplace is a beauty, all marble and finely crafted by the owner herself and there's lovely original art on the walls. The kitchen is very well stocked, stainless pots and pans, sharp knives, plenty of glassware and cooking instruments, an electric oven and touch-type electric hob, both of which worked very well (even did some baking and had no problems). There is plenty of natural light during the day, high quality windows, working shutters. The bedroom is very sweet, painted a light lilac color with a crystal-like chandelier, very cozy, good for dreaming. The foam mattress was ok for us, but might be a problem for larger/ heavier people, there is no foot board, so its good for tall people. The shower was very hot with good pressure, but the hot water tank is small so you have to either be quick or stagger showers a bit. The washing machine works very well and does a quick cycle which dries evenn faster outside in all the sunshine! The patio is perfect, just like the pictures, relaxing and very few people/cars/tractors going by on the gravel road alongside of it. The place was spotlessly clean when we arrived, immaculate! The owners, Iva & Max were just fantastic--so helpful, friendly and easy-going, spoke English well and I think they speak German and Italian too, but they are Croatian, so its nice to know you are renting from local people. Rakalj is wonderful, perfect for a writing retreat or just unwinding! We got a lot of work done and enjoyed walks every night on a different trail leading from the village to beautiful views of the sea. The neighbors are all friendly, so are the dogs and cats! The local shop has basic provisions, including beer, bread, yogurt, some frozen vegetables and occasionally basic fresh vegetables but you need to bring most of your fresh food with you or drive a half hour to get it. No outdoor market nearby either. There seems to be a lot of rental places in Rakalj, but we can't imagine any are as nice as this one (although Iva and Max own another, larger one nearby, so that must be just as nice!). We doubt anyone would be disappointed staying there! The fact that its affordable only makes it even sweeter. Highly recommended.
