Come and enjoy our 18th century traditional cosy Galloway stone cottage, nestled in a small hamlet, in the Nith Valley, 8 miles north of Dumfries. The area offers peace and tranquility in gorgeous, countryside where there is an abundance of wildlife, even get close to the now rare red squirrel. Walks and cycle trails start right at the cottage door. Maps are provided. Drive for miles on traffic free roads.

The local River Nith is 2 miles away, with it's tributaries which are famous for trout, sea trout and salmon. Permits are available locally. Rainbow trout and course fishing are also available. Other activities include golf, horse-riding, pottery, painting, bird watching, bee-keeping (Help or watch the owner produce his very own honey), quad biking, sailing, museums, castles and more, not forgetting the tea room trail!

We had a lovely time at the Old Smithy. The cottage had everything we needed - and more! It was set in beautiful surroundings and the sight and sound of the burn was very relaxing. Margaret and Hamish welcomed us with some homemade honey and...More

We have spent our third holiday with Margaret and Hamish and as alway we were made so welcome. Hamish as alway full of information about fishing in the area which is always very helpful. Weather this year was fantastic, can't wait to return soon.

We are one of the very few dark Sky ares in Dumfries and Galloway so star gazing is popular in Glenmidge Thornhill is a lovely little town close by with wide streets and plenty free parking Further on is Drumlanrig Castle home of the Buccleugh Family with famous art collection, Children's activity centre ,also miles of marked trails for walking or cycling . Contact owner for full travel details . We are 1hr drive from Glasgow and 1.5 from Edinburgh. From the North - travel on M74/A74. At junction 14, take the A702 for A76/Thornhill. Join the A76 at Carronbridge, continue till you reach Auldgirth. At shop turn right signed Dunscore/Penpont, follow sign for Glenmidge. From South - travel on M6. At junction 22, take the A75 for Dumfries/Stranraer, Continue on A75 until reaching roundabout signed for A76 Thornhill/Kilmarnock. Take the A76, Auldgirth is 7 miles north. At the shop turn left signed Dunscore/Penpont, follow sign for Glenmidge.We are in the Nith valley 2 miles from Auldgirth In the little hamlet of Glenmidge DG20SW
