Memphis is known as a cultural center, particularly for the musical performing arts, and therefore offers a wide range of venues for viewing a variety of performances.  There are four main places where visitors might want to stop to check out Memphis performing arts:

  • Opera Memphis ( www.operamemphis.org) has been bringing professional opera to Memphis for more than fifty years.
  • Playhouse on the Square ( www.playhouseonthesquare.org) was established more than thirty five years ago and is known for constantly challenging its own boundaries in the theater arts.
  • The Memphis Symphony Orchestra ( www.memphissymphony.org) and its sister group, the Memphis Symphony Chorus, are central to the classical music community of Memphis and offer performances throughout the year.
  • The Orpheum Theater ( www.orpheum-memphis.com) is the place to go to see Broadway musicals in Memphis.  Interestingly, the Orpheum Theater also plays classic movies and hosts concerts by famous performers.  Ballet Memphis, the only professional ballet group in the entire geographic region, also performs at this location.

Guests interested in performing arts which are not quite so expensive or established should try to visit Memphis during the month of May when Memphis in May events ( www.memphisinmay.org) are going on.  The Beale Street Music Festival and the events of International Week are not to be missed.
