Most visitors to Beaufort come by automobile.

From Charleston, take U.S. Highway 17 south for about 50 miles (80 km) to Gardens Corner.  At Gardens Corner, turn onto U.S. Highway 21 south toward Beaufort.  Follow U.S. 21 for about 12 miles (20 km) and continue straight on U.S. Business 21 when U.S. 21 veers to the right.

From downtown Savannah, take U.S. Highway 17 north for about 5 miles (8 km) over the Talmadge Bridge and into South Carolina.  Veer right onto S.C. Highway 315 and follow the road for about 6 miles (10 km).  The road will turn into S.C. Highway 170.  Follow S.C. 170 all the way until it ends at U.S. Business 21 in Beaufort.

From points south / west of Beaufort (& Savannah/Hilton Head Int'l Airport), take Interstate 95 north in South Carolina to Exit 8 (U.S. Highway 278).  Take U.S. 278 east for about 5 miles (8km).  Watch out for a left-turn to Beaufort near an area with car dealerships.  Make a left onto Argent Boulevard and follow this road for just under 4 miles (7 km).  Make a left onto S.C. Highway 170 and follow it all the way until it ends at U.S. Business 21 in Beaufort.

From points north of Beaufort, take Interstate 95 south to Exit 33 (U.S. Highway 17 north).  Take U.S. 17 north for about 9 miles (15 km) to Gardens Corner.   At Gardens Corner, turn onto U.S. Highway 21 south toward Beaufort.  Follow U.S. 21 for about 12 miles (20 km) and continue straight on U.S. Business 21 when U.S. 21 veers to the right.

By Air

The nearest commercial airport to Beaufort is the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, located about 50 minutes away.  Flyers may also consider flying into Charleston International Airport, about a 75 minute drive from Beaufort.  Both airports are served by American, Delta, JetBlue, United, and US Airways.  Savannah is also served by Allegiant Air and Sun Country Airlines. Charleston is also served by Southwest, Alaska Airlines (starting in October 2015), and Silver Airways. The Hilton Head Island Airport (45-50 minutes drive) also offers service with US Airways Express to Charlotte.  Sometimes Augusta, Ga., Columbia, S.C., or Jacksonville  will offer lower fares than any of the three area airports, though these airports are at least two hours away from Beaufort.  All major car rental agencies have service desks in the baggage claim areas of these airports.

Located five minutes east of downtown Beaufort on Lady's Island, the Beaufort County Airport has general aviation services.

 

By Bus / Shuttle

Beaufort receives intercity bus service through Greyhound Lines.  The Greyhound bus station is located at 3659 Trask Parkway, about 4 miles (7 km) west of downtown Beaufort.  The bus station is open for ticketing and departures from 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM and 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM.  Taxis are typically available at the station to get you to your destination.  The bus station can be reached at 843-524-4646.

Two routes go through Beaufort, with connecting services to major transfer stations in Savannah and Charlotte.  Northbound buses from Savannah arrive at 11:20 AM and 8:20 PM.  Southbound buses from Charlotte arrive at 2:20 PM and 9:25 PM.

If traveling without a car to Beaufort from Charleston, the quickest and most sensible option would be to use a shuttle service, as Greyhound does not offer a direct service between the two cities and requires a lengthy transfer stop.

 

By Train

The closest passenger rail station to Beaufort is located in Yemassee, about 30 minutes north of Beaufort.  Amtrak provides two north-south services that stop in Yemassee - the Palmetto (connecting New York and Savannah via Washington, DC) and the Silver Meteor (connecting New York with Miami).  Travellers will need to arrange for additional transportation to get to Beaufort.

 

By Boat

A sizable number of visitors arrive in Beaufort via the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway.  The Downtown Marina offers short and long-term docking and anchorage for visiting vessels, as well as a ship's store, showers, restrooms, and a courtesy car for conveniences.  The marina is located at mile 536 and can be contacted via VHF channel 16 during standard hours throughout the year.
