By air: The airport serving Rockford is the Chicago / Rockford International Airport ( http://www.flyrfd.com) which is served by small airlines including Allegiant Air and United. This airport is located approximately five miles from the center of Rockford . Travelers can rent a car from Avis ( www.avis.com), Hertz ( www.hertz.com) or National ( www.nationalcar.com) for travel from the airport to their hotel destination. Travelers interested in flying to a larger airport can fly in to Chicago ’s O’Hare ( http://www.ohare.com/) which is located just over an hour’s drive away from Rockford .
By car: Travelers who wish to reach Rockford by car will use Interstate 39 or Interstate 90 to reach the general area. It should be noted that part of Interstate 90 is a toll road. By bus: Travelers can reach Rockford by Burlington Trailways bus (https://www.burlingtontrailways.com) which connects in Chicago to Greyhound buses. The bus stops at the Rockford Mass Transit District's East Side Transfer Center at 725 N Lyford Road, . Travelers who are coming from the Chicago area can opt instead to use the Van Galder Bus ( http://www.coachusa.com/vangalder/) system which operates from downtown Chicago and both Chicago airports and continues on to Madison Wisconsin. Greyhound no longer stops in Rockford.
By train: Travelers can reach Rockford using the Amtrak train system ( www.amtrak.com). The Rockford train station for Amtrak Thruway service is located at 7559 Walton Street , just off of Interstate 90 and Highway 20, making it convenient to get to and from the station. Note: This is not actually an Amtrak Station, but rather the Van Galder Bus Depot from which one can ride a bus into Chicago to catch a train. Rockford hasn't had active passenger rail service in over 30 years.
