With times as they are here are some cost savings tips for Keystone.   And hey you visitors feel free to add!

Keystone is pretty much Condo heaven.  For condos very close to the lifts look at Slopeside, studios and 1 bedrooms.  Key Condos, studios to 3 bedrooms.  Long considered to be in a prime location.  Both are at the Mountain House base. and are close enough to ski home for lunch. Further away are Wild Irishman and Flying Dutchman. These units are in a treed setting away from things, but you will need to take the shuttle.  All of these are older properties but most have been updated. Be sure to ask.

In River Run the prices tend to be higher than in Mountain House. Of those Silver Mill and Expedition Station tend to be lower.  The most imporant thing to ask about is sqaure footage and views. Some of the lower priced places will have views of the parking lot.

Renting from the owners may save up to 50%.  There are a number of owner sites that allows you to select the exact accommodations that suit your needs and budget plus see pictures of the unit you are renting.  Remember when renting owner direct to always speak with the owner, not just via email.  Doing this simple thing will save you from 99% of scams.

If owner direct is not for you  There are many other smaller management agencies. Summit Cove, Sky Run, Key to the Rockies and many others.

Know that Keystone Resort  charge guests a Resort Fee of $20.00 per on top of other taxes and fees.  Be certain to understand the total amount of your stay.

Cat Skiing, you can do an all day trip but since they are saving money take the 5.00 ride at the top of the outback.  Be aware they only accept cash!

Ski/Board Rentals:  Locally owned and operated, Mountain View Sports has good gear and offers 20% off their already low prices with advanced online reservations.  SkiCoupons offers on-line coupons too http://www.skicoupons.com/

Food and Drink.  There are a few casual places..  New Moon Cafe, Kickapoo.  The bar at the Snake has a pub menu that is very reasonable.  Go for happy hour even better.  Go early and avoid the cover charge later.  Dos Locos has a good happy hour, the best time to eat there, other than that skip it, but $1.00 tacos attracts lots of locals.  For a treat lunch at the Stube.  Yeah not cheap but elegant and the price is significantly less than for dinner.  Pizza 101 for delivery, the best pizza at Keystone by far.  When it is busy though be prepared to wait upwards of an hour.  Just outside of Keystone is the Cala Inn at Summit Cove.  Lots of locals.  In Dillon the Pub Down Under offers great nightly specials. It is under the Arapahoe café.  Love the Ruby Red Trout and the Chicken Fried Steak.

There is a new Subway in Mountain View Plaza (in the middle of Keystone).

Brown Bagging it.  At the condos near the slopes ski home for lunch!  For picnics you  can take in the views at Summit House.  On a nice day sit in the Adirondack chairs and watch the newbie’s learn to ski.  For a more quiet location the outpost has a nice deck.  Hate paying $$$ for hot chocolate? You can buy hot water for 50¢ at the Summit House and Outpost.  It is by the coffee machine. Keep a couple of packs of Swiss Miss in your pocket.  Pick up free granola bars at the ticket window and you have a nice snack.  Grab free hot cider at the information booth at Dercum Mountain, just ouside of Summit House.

The liquor store in Dillon next to the City Market has good prices and a good selection.  Avoid the liquor stores at Keystone.  Much much higher.  If you do have a drinking emergency the liquor store by the gas station is your best bet for selection and prices.

Activities, Take a day off and rent snowshoes there are tons of great FREE trails in Keystone.  Breeze rents them for  around 15.00 a day.  Bring your coupon for even less.  Same for Cross County but you probably will need to rent them at the Nordic Center.  At the Nordic center they also rent out tubes for sledding, Yoy will have to do it  the old fashioned way and hike back up but the cost is much less that tubing on the mountain.  Tubing on the mountain is a must do though for at least one day.  You may not know that Keystone has the largest outdoor maintained ice skating rink in North America, take a day off from skiing and skate!

One thing not to skimp on is tips, tipping is customary in the USA and does include tipping your ski instructor. While it may seem that lesson are costly, they are well worth it!
