Chowrasta - literally means 4 ways. In reality Chowrasta does have more than 4 ways to get in and out. May be during the British era it had 4 prominent ways to get in and out.

Chowrasta is a cultural hub of Darjeeling where everything is organised from rock shows to political rallies. This is where youths, elders, sportsmen, women and tourist/travellers meet and greet each other. Darjeeling does not have a better landmark than "Chowrasta, this is where the heart of Darjeeling is. There is something here for everyone. Pony rides for kids, bookshop for readers, coffee shop for caffeine champions, souvenirs for shoppers, small eating joints (off the pony stable) for the foodie and ofcourse Darjeeling tea for connoisseurs.

The best part (and a lot to do with its popularity) is that Chowrasta is starting and ending point of the famous Mall Road (the road is a loop). This is where the view is. On a clear day, Mount Kantchendzonga can be seen on its full glory, changes colour as the day progresses from morning to evening.

To remind one of the bygone British era, there still is the water fountain, some remains of the iron railings and the prominent buildings that are converted into shops and hotels.

It is certain that on your visit to Darjeeling, one way or the other, you will end up here, would say Chowrasta will pull you towards it and then let go, so saying, 'a visit is a must' is useless because you will end up there anyway. So enjoy connecting your heart to the heart of Darjeeling.
