GETTING AROUND PENANG BY BUS GEORGE TOWN Going round George Town, on a circular route, is the free single decker CAT – Central Area Transit bus. It will take you to most places in George Town but for more information on its route look at www.rapidpg.com.
/journey-planner/route-maps/ Just look for CAT on the front. Also going round George Town, and not to be confused with the CAT, is the HopOnHopOff double decker bus. The HOHO has two routes – a City Route and a Beach route and you can switch between the two. Tickets are valid for 24 hours, 48 hours or a new single trip ticket. Running between 9am and 8pm it’s a good way of going to all the main tourist sights and choosing how long you want to stay at each. Time between buses is 20-30 minutes. See
for up to date prices and routes. There is another free bus doing the Pulau Tikus Loop. Up Jalan Kelawai, Tanjung Tokong Road, Jalan Fettes, Mount Erskine, Burma Road, Jalan Pangkor and back up Kelawai. Goes from outside the back of Gurney Plaza/Paragon Mall on the hour. The rapidpenang bus service is an excellent and cheap way to get around. Just buy your ticket on the bus (they don’t give change so carry a few RM1 notes and loose change) or get a Rapid Passport which will give you unlimited transport for a week. For where to get your passport (plastic card – no photo needed) and more information see www.rapidpg.com.
