The first thing you need to do whenever you land in any city is - to find a way to get to your hotel/accomodation from airport. Most of the times, one has to arrange their own transfer. At Bangalore Airport, this becomes particularly painful as the airport is quite far from the city. The below options are available currently for transfer to/from the airport.

  • The cheapest and the best option is always to opt for public transport, in this case the State Government operated BMTC (Volvo, mostly) buses. Frequency of these buses is highest - every 5-10 minutes between about 0500 through to about 2300 - but there are enough services to get you into the heart of the city and beyond through the night too at maximum half-an-hour intervals. The pricing of these buses is about 70-80% cheaper than the private taxis and their schedules can be found online as well as at kiosks at the airport and most of all from very helpful drivers and conductors at the bus station. These BMTC buses (known as VAYU VAJRA) cover most of the known points in the city and provide safe and economical intermodal connections to all railway stations and bus terminals in Bangalore/Bengaluru and many of the hotels too. Inbound, if you want to go to a location in the heart of the City where they have a covered terminal which is like a safe haven while you get your breath back, then head for Shanti Nagar (BMTC Headquarters terminal, they also have a dedicated lounge with clean toilet for airport bus passengers).  The counter for these buses is just outside the airport terminal. You can just walk from the terminal to the BMTC bus terminal and buy your ticket on the bus. Incidentally, you can take heavy baggage on the bus itself, at no extra charge. The most important factor here as a regular traveller to BLR is that the bus drivers are all senior experienced drivers with safe driving skillsets and the conductors are excellent guides and very helpful. Outbound back to the Airport you may want to research the closest point to your location or use some major pick-up points like Shanti Nagar Terminal, Mekhri Circle or others.Bengaluru Airport (KIAL) bus station
  • The BMTC Vayu Vajra (Volvo, mostly) buses listed above also are fitted out for wheelchair assistance and wheelchair lockable slots. I have seen conductors and drivers being very helpful in this context.
  • The second option is to follow the signs and walk to the airport taxi counter where you stand in a line and take a radio taxi from a choice of 3 operators (MERU, Mega and Karnataka Tourism). For group up to 8 people contact Orkid Taxi Service (09535224211). (Beware a current scam at the airport where someone makes an approach at Arrivals bearing a tatty 'Meru' company card, and ushers towards an unmarked car in the parking lot - they can be very insistent, hurrying towards the car before there is time to think it through properly, especially after a long flight).
  • The third option is to hire a self drive car rentals from  zoomcar.com where you can rent the car by hour or day or month for cars like Reva, Ford figo, Honda city, XUV, BMW etc. There has been quite a lot of great feedback from customers recently.
  • The last option is booking a pre-arranged airport transfer through an online portal.  etc. As the prices are not dependent on metre-reading, one need not worry that he is being cheated!  Also, there are lot of vehicles to choose from. So, if in a bigger group, one can opt to book a vehicle with more seating capacity. In case you want to book a cab for outstation trip, you can book your cab online on any of these sites
  • General Caution should be practiced like any other big city around the world. For Solo Women travellers, it would make sense to call the Host / Hotel immediately after boarding the Cab announcing the Registration Number of the vehicle and  expected time of arrival.
  • You can also compare prices of cabs at taxiclues.com and then book the cab in advance. This way you will save at least 30-40% over counter booking.
  • Make sure you double confirm with driver 30 mins prior to pick up time. In some cases of bookig at night cab driver ignore the phone calls. In case of emergy always confirm with your driver before 30 mins. If this happens that driver dont reply to call then call customer care and they will re allocate a cab for you. Above mentioned cab services are reliable and their customer support is good. Some more cab services like cabs-24x7 provides outstation cabs from bangalore Birport to Mysore and some other location nearest to bangalore.

There are plans by the government to start metro and high speed rail link to the airport, its still in theplanning stage - no work has started yet.
