One of the most unique and gorgeous souveniers in all of Tahiti and her islands is the Black Pearl. The oyster species Pinctada margaritifers yields a dark pearl which varies in hue and intensity. Colors range from light gray to dark gray with rainbows of pink or green. The darker peacock greens are the most sought after and the most expensive. The best place to buy pearls with the largest selection is on Tahiti or Moorea. When shopping for pearls, search for as round a pearl as you can find with no inclusions (small pin pricks) and a smooth surface without rings around the pearl. There are many small shops dotted around the islands that sell pearls at a more reasonable rate than the big fancy air conditioned stores.
