The Ivato Airport is the major airport that serves Antananarivo, the capital city of Madagascar. Airlines that serve Antananarivo include Air Austral, Air Mauritius, Interair South Africa, and Air Madagascar. Air Madagascar is the airline that provides service between Antananarivo and other cities within Madagascar as well.
Taxis are readily available from the airport to the city; your fare would be something like 25,000-30,000 Ariary. While there is bus service from the airport, it can be quite unreliable.
Car hire Companies
Rental cars are available from the airport; both Hertz and Avis have service desks at the airport. However, roads conditions throughout much of the country leave a lot to be desired; and poor lighting makes for dangerous conditions when driving at night. Traveling around the city is much easier and relatively inexpensive by taxi.
When departing Tana, make sure you spend any remaining local currency 'before' going through departures. There are a few craft shops at the terminal building to help with this. Also, depending on the flight timings and meals served on the flight, have something to eat before you get to the airport as there are no catering facilities once you go through departures.
At the time of writing (Nov 12) one couldnt buy any liquid items / gifts (honey, alcohol, jams etc) that was over 100ml if you were connecting at Paris to another destination. The duty free shops do not have facilities to seal the purchases. So if interested, buy these items before departures and pack it in your check-in luggage.
The duty-free shops, of which the choice is limited, accept major foreign currencies only and they do not accept local currency.
