David McCullough's 1776 is a popular book covering the American Revolution from a military standpoint. 

For an alternative view of USA history, check out Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States : 1492-Present which exposes a number of lesser known bits of American history. 

If you're looking for a more humorous take, Jon Stewart's America provides a hilarious spin on much the nation's history.

This book has been very helpful to colleagues from the UK when they were seconded to the United States for a prolonged period of time.  This particular book is not only excellent for standard American usage and slang but has helpful sections on American customs and traditions.
