Like many towns in Italy, the best way to Assisi is by walking around and exploring the city with your own two feet. For the most part, the main portion of the walled city is inaccessible to motor vehicles. You will want to park your car at one of the many parking lots outside the city's walls. Shuttle bus service is provided from the parking areas into the historical center.

Although streets in Assisi can be steep, winding, and quite narrow, the historical center is really not that hard to navigate. If you're nervous about getting lost, grab a map at the local tourist office, but, if you really get in a bind, don't be afraid to ask a local (or one of the myriad of other tourists out exploring the town).
