The Markethalle takes place on the Münster Square in front of the cathedral, and is open every weekday from 7am to 1pm. Here, vendors offer a large variety of fruits and vegetables. At the square, you will also find a good cheese shop called the Käsespezialitäten, which offers local specialties such as the Black Forest schwarzwalder. The products can be a bit pricey, but they have a large selection of artisan-crafted cheeses from all over Europe that you will not find in supermarkets or smaller shops.

The old town has a large number of boutiques, perfume stores, jewelers and small book, arts or crafts shops, so it is worth your while to stroll through the pedestrian-only section of town if you want to buy some local crafts. Stores are generally open from 9 or 10am to 7 or 8pm, Monday through Friday. They close a little earlier on Saturday (except during the Christmas season) and are not open at all on Sundays. There are also a few malls and shopping centers located throughout the city, including Schwarzwald-City on Schiffstr, Karlsbaupassage on Karlsplatz, and the Atrium on Augustinerplatz.

If you cannot find what you are looking for in Freiburg, try crossing the border into France or Switzerland. The large cities of Stuttgart, Strasbourg and Zurich are all within driving distance, and there are smaller cities closer to the border with shops as well.
